Publisher's summary

It sends a shiver down Detective Superintendent Alan Markby's spine when he hears that a rambler has stumbled across human bones in Stovey Woods in the heart of the Cotswolds. Twenty-two years earlier, as a fresh-faced young inspector, he had a rare failure in the hunt for a brutal serial rapist preying on local women. After the third rape, the attacker went to ground, never to be heard of again. Now, with a new investigation prompted by the grisly remains, the trail could be warm once more.

But almost immediately, Markby is confronted with another body and a thoroughly up-to-date murder. Could the two be connected? Perhaps, but it seems that some of the village residents would be just as happy to let sleeping dogs lie and secrets, both old and new, stay hidden.

Critic reviews

"The author demonstrates her skill at updating the traditional English village murder mystery." (Publishers Weekly)
"This is a rock-solid British village procedural, complete with detailed setting, slightly degenerate denizens, and ongoing personal conflicts." (Library Journal)

Great Addition to Series

I've read almost all of the Mitchell/Markaby series
and am thrilled that Audible has added so many of the titles recently.

The village of Lower Stovey virtually becomes a character itself in this novel. Old Billy,Dillys(sp)and others
are unforgettable just as is the Vicar's daughter who never fit into village life. The relationship of Mitchell and Markaby, whose love story is a strange one, takes
several twists in this tale. Markaby is at his best solving both an ancient murder and new ones
as well. He never gives up on a case.

If you love English mysteries that keep you guessing, this one is it. Narrator Judith Bond is a
national treasure in her ability to interpret characters in every one of these books. I also
recommend Say It With Poison as the first book and
a really superb story as well.

Always interesting little twists before getting to the final solution. Looking forward to seeing Meredith’s & Alan’s relationship moving forward.

Old school but fun

This was my first listen to books in this series, and it has turned out to be my favorite. The story is downright fascinating when compared with the others, although it's pretty tame and gives a grotesquely quaint view (at times) of a very sickening crime that occurred far too often. I don't think I even want to feel burlap again, never mind smell it. I've been listening to "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" trilogy, and for those of you who've read them and this book, you'll appreciate my desire to see Lisbeth Salander come to Stovey Woods (excuse all typos -- typing from memory only).

I could not finish this one

This had to be one of the worst books in my Audible library. Story drags.
