"This is the best of the novels starring Christie's Miss Marple." (The New York Times)
The Joan Hickson Miss Marple series was a staple in my house when I was little, and I was always quite fond of watching them. All except A Pocket Full of Rye. That one always felt too gory. It scared the hell out of younger me.
So purchasing this audio was by way of being an act of courage as well as an attempt at a corrective experience... and I must say it worked out marvelously.
Ms. Hickson is a marvel. Engaging, dramatic, subtly-voiced and remarkably skillful at bringing to life this terrible tale of murder and malice. She's taken my once-avoided source of dismay and transformed it into an instant favorite.
I very much recommend it. Worth every penny.
Yet again Joan Hickson's perfect clipped English diction makes for wonderful listening. She is the perfect Agatha Christie narrator and tells this story beautifully. Very well written, keeps you guessing.
So I'm biased but I simply love Joan Hickson narrating this series of books. Miss Marple has always been my favourite Christie character and to find the series narrated by Joan Hickson is a bonus. Christie fans you simply can't go wrong!

I just love Joan Hickson's narration and although I knew from the tv series who the murderer was, I still enjoyed it thoroughly.
If your a keen Agather Christie fan than this is a memorable listen. Jam packed full of murder, intrigue, sadness!
Well narrated by Joan Hickson, a very intresting storyline with lots of different ways in which it could have been done. As with all Agatha Christie audio books I didn't get the right culprit but never mind I really enjoyed listening to the book.
Is there anything you would change about this book?
This is one of the first Christie's where I guessed the killer correctly right at the beginning, but it's still a good one. I love the way she interlocks nursery rhymes and crimes. However, just under 5 hours in there's some awful scratching noise on the recording. I used to have this same recording on cd, so it wasn't on the original. For this reason I can't give it higher than 3 stars, but if you can ignore the 5 minutes of 'nails down a blackboard' sound in the background it is worth it. Hopefully Audible will sort it out fast.
What was one of the most memorable moments of A Pocket Full of Rye?
Miss Marple's fluttering around the police inspector. Priceless.
What aspect of Joan Hickson’s performance might you have changed?
Joan Hickson is the archetypal Miss Marple - the perfect combination of fluffy old pussy and nosy neighbour. No one since has ever measured up in my opinion.
Was A Pocket Full of Rye worth the listening time?
Worth the time.
