Mary Roach
Follow New York Times best-selling author Mary Roach - but be careful not to trip - as she weaves through personal anecdotes and everyday musings riddled with her uncanny wit and amazingly analytical eye. These essays, which found a well-deserved home within the pages of Reader's Digest as the column "My Planet," detail the inner workings of hypochondriacs, hoarders, and compulsive cheapskates. (Did we mention neurotic interior designers and professional list makers?) For Roach, humor is hidden in the most unlikely places, which means that nothing is off limits. Whether she is dwelling on her age or talking about the pros and cons of a bedroom night light - "A married couple can best be defined as a unit of people whose sleep habits are carefully engineered to keep each other awake" - Roach finds a lesson, a slice of sarcasm, or a dash of something special that makes each day comical and absolutely priceless.
In keeping with our mission - curating the best listens in the land - Reader's Digest editors neatly packaged these timeless (and hilarious) Roach essays together for the first time.

Unfortunately, the narrator's performance doesn't meet the same standard sounding too immature for the material and not conveying the obvious humour in the text.

Mary's own personality comes though, and she seems like a person you'd like to know in person. Also, almost all of the book is g rated, with a sprinkling of pg stuff like a tiny bit of bad language.
The narrator sounds like a brash NYC comedian, which sometimes doesn't feel right but overall didn't detract too much.
Very Funny

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I do not know. I could not get past the second chapter because of the narrator. I have read everything else Mary Roach has published so I was glad to see this. But the narrator was so irritating, I could not continue.Would you be willing to try another one of Angela Dawe’s performances?
Not in a million years.Couldn't Stand The Narrator!

The narrator sounded like she was announcing each word instead of reading it; I frequently had to turn the volume down because of that.

I had Only known of Mary Roach through her science books ("Gulp", "Spook", "Packing for Mars", and "Grunt", and I think she has another one coming out soon), but even her scientific books are highly amusing. Turns out, she's a well-known humorist who writes a column and everything! She reminds me a bit of Erma Bombeck. I was definitely in need of humor, and this really hit the spot.
What a wonderful book; I'm certainly happy for my discovery of it!

What did you like best about My Planet? What did you like least?
i've read several of roach's books and often enjoyed their research and insight. that was no different here. What didn’t you like about Angela Dawe’s performance?
i feel awful saying this, but her voice made me turn it off at several points to have a break from it. her characterization of an automated phone voice was incredible, and when characterizing men, it was decent. otherwise i felt like she was always delivering headlines, or constantly giving the lead in before a punch line without the follow through. her voice never seemed to relax and it put me on edge the entire time. her cadence was too repetitive for me.nearly unlistenable
