Publisher's Summary

The late Grammy-winning founder of the legendary pop/R&B/soul/funk/disco group tells his story and charts the rise of his legendary band in this sincere memoir that captures the heart and soul of an artist whose groundbreaking sound continues to influence music today. With a foreword by David Foster.

With its dynamic horns, contrasting vocals, and vivid stage shows, Earth, Wind & Fire was one of the most popular acts of the late 20th century - the band "that changed the sound of black pop" (Rolling Stone) - and its music continues to inspire modern artists including Usher, Jay Z, CeeLo Green, and Outkast. At last the band's founder, Maurice White, shares the story of his success.

White reflects on the great blessings music has brought to his life and the struggles he's endured: his mother leaving him behind in Memphis when he was four; learning to play the drums with Booker T. Jones; moving to Chicago at 18 and later Los Angeles after leaving the Ramsey Lewis Trio; forming EWF, only to have the original group fall apart; working with Barbra Streisand and Neil Diamond; his diagnosis of Parkinson's; and his final public performance with the group at the 2006 Grammy Awards. Through it all White credits his faith for his amazing success and guidance in overcoming his many challenges.

My Life with Earth Wind, & Fire is an intimate, moving, and beautiful memoir from a man whose creativity and determination carried him to great success and whose faith enabled him to savor every moment.

Told in a way to: Keep Your Head (In This Book!!)

This is officially the best audible bio book I've listened to!. Brother Maurice was the definition of a man. I literally couldn't stop listening to his story. AND... I'm going to listen to it again. It's that heavy. Thanks Maurice for the music and the no holds barred look into your life. Extremely well arranged and told. Wow.

Absorbing and enjoyable read.

This is a very revealing account of the life of the great Maurice White, and the building and operating of perhaps the most successful band that recorded and performed at such a high degree of musicality. More than just a story as Mr. White gives us a deep look into the spiritual influences that lead to great popular music with a positive and uplifting message. There are many views and lessons into operations in the music business. I highly recommend this book to readers who love music.

Stunning story, amazing honesty.

What did you love best about My Life with Earth, Wind & Fire?

I liked hearing the stories behind my favorite EWF songs. I also loved hearing about Maurice's background. I had no idea he had touched so much music before his fame with EWF. If your an aspiring artist, yoiu'll also get some insight into the music business and how recording, touring, songwriting and record sales work.

Who was your favorite character and why?

(SPOILER ALERT) Maurice, of course. He had a very complex upbringing. The moist poignant observation is because he was separated from his mother at a young age, and did not start to live with her until he was almost an adult, and then went on the road soon after, he felt like he has missed many family memories that he could not share with his siblings.

Have you listened to any of Dion Graham’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes I have. Dion Graham is at his best here. I have no criticism of his interpretation of the story.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

The Guru who sings...

Any additional comments?

Please treat yourself and buy this audiobook. If you love EWF songs, you will not be disappointed. It would also be helpful to go back and listen to a song after it's discussed in the book. All of them can be found on Youtube.

Beautiful spiritual and uplifting

Always my favorite, Maurice White managed to amaze me even more with his touching, uplifting, and encouraging story of music, life struggles and disappointments and finding joy in the simple things. He wasn't perfect, but he was real. We share a birthday as well...fire!

If You Ever Loved any Earth, Wind & Fire Song...

You are going to love this book! I loved the music of EWF from the very first note I heard. Herb Powell marvelously reveals the mystery and magic of Maurice White. This book is an incredibly compelling revelation of the creative genius behind Earth, Wind and Fire. Maurice White's life story is as inspiring and majestic as his music.

A great look at a great musician

Any additional comments?

EWF are my all time favourite group but I did not know too much about their history and virtually nothing of Maurice White's life, so I found this book very interesting. The story although not containing any real surprises was very well told and the reader was perfection.
A great insight into the 1970's and 1980's music scene.
