Publisher's summary

A sci-Regency novel.

When Intergalactic Navy Captain Nathaniel Hawkins goes undercover to investigate the theft of an IN weapons stash, the mission raises painful memories from his past. Using a title he fled nearly two decades earlier, Nate once again becomes the earl of Deverell, heir to the duke of Hawthorne, in order to navigate the ins and outs of a Regency world. But planet Regelence - where young lords are supposed to remain pure until marriage - has a few surprises for Nate, not the least of which is his attraction to Prince Aiden.

A talented artist, Prince Aiden Townsend isn't interested in politics and the machinations of society gentlemen, and he adamantly rejects the idea of marriage and a consort. Aiden wants the freedom to pursue his art and determine his own future. But the arrival of the dashing and mysterious Deverell awakens feelings of passion and longing the young prince can't deny.

As Nate uncovers a conspiracy reaching far beyond the stolen weapons, his future is irrevocably altered by the temptations of a life he never thought he could have. Drawn into the web of intrigue, Aiden is in danger of losing his life...and his heart.

Narration so bad

I have read this story and enjoyed it very much. But, the narrator is so bad, that I could not even complete listening. Why was an older sounding narrator selected when the men in the story are portrayed as young virile men. The narrator has no inflection what so ever and completely monotone and pauses in sentences in obvious wrong places to change the whole structure of the statement. It was painful and I was so disappointed as I had been waiting for this audio book.
I have returned the book and if they keep the same narrator I will not buy any more in this series. I dont know why more care is not placed on the selection of narrator, I am not sure who has the final say, but it can change the who premise, flow of a story.

Great premise, boring narrator!

This writer has promise. It is terrible that her work was narrated by one of the most boring readers in Audible history! I am hoping to see more from this writer and wish to revisit the world she created in this novel. This simply must be the beginning of a series - a very long one, please. Welcome to Audible, J. L. Langley! You are a refreshing addition.

Bad Narration

While I highly recommend reading this book (and the rest of the series), I do not recommend listening to it. The narrator sounds as though he is bored. There is no inflection in his voice, and his phrasing sometimes makes it difficult to know who is speaking.

Don’t skip this, despite the narration

I never thought I would find a book that combines regency romance and space opera. And yet, here it is. This story had some laugh out loud funny moments and some very charming characters, although I actually found The supporting cast more memorable than the two leads. The premise is quirky, but the author pulls it off well enough that you can buy into the world they have created. I will be reading the rest of the series, despite the unfortunate choice of narrator.

I can understand why other reviewer‘s came down so hard on. Joseph Morton’s performance. He reads the entire thing in one voice, with absolutely no attempt to distinguish characters. His voice isn’t unpleasant, and he doesn’t do any of those really awful things that narrators can occasionally do, like miss pronounce words or breathe really loudly. If he were reading a different kind of book his narration would be great. It’s just that this book is meant to be funny. The characters have such distinct voices that to have them all read the exact same way really does take away from the story. Of course, this is the kind of story that could just as easily have been over acted by an aerator. The characters have such big personalities that I could see someone else making the mistake of reading them in really cheesy, over the top voices, which in my opinion would have been worse than Morton’s monotone.

That said, if you’re like me and are on able to access print media, the book is still worth reading, and it will still be enjoyable, just perhaps not a five star listen.

Enjoyable

In my opinion, the narration is not as bad as some listeners previously mentioned. It is not the best, but I think the most important thing is the narrator did not take away or distract listeners from the story or the characters themselves.

revised from original

I wish there had been a note that this is a revised edition. The relationship between Nate and Aidan has been toned down and stripped of some of the best dialogue from the original book (I have the ebook and paperback). It's still a good book just not as interesting or fun.

great story, needed a different narrator

I read this novel a while ago and loved it. I was excited to see it as an audiobook. Unfortunately, this narrator was not a good choice. He has a very pleasant, clear voice. However, this is not his genre. He's clearly reading it and not bringing it to life. I did speed it up a tiny bit which helps. If they continue with other audiobooks in the series, I hope they choose another narrator. I think this narrator is better suited to other genres.

1/2

Sooooo I hate to write this, the story was great I really enjoyed it, I just couldn’t get over the narrator’s voice though.....I kept seeing all the characters as old men, the voice just kinda killed it.....the narrator did a fine job with telling the story, just that voice...the voice of a grandfather:-/ SO that’s why I gave it a low score:-(

I Love This Book

I have read J.L. Langley for years, and I love the narrator of this series. It reminds me of being read to when I was younger. I love this gentleman's voice. I will say that I was surprised at first as in this day and age of audio books we are used to the books being performed. This gentleman reads the story with inflection, however there are not different voices for each character. The story is really read to you. I have listened to both ways and I will admit to loving the different ways people bring books to life. This was a wonderful story and I loved how J.L. Langley updated it. I have not read one of her books that I dislike. I love her writing style and how she tells a story.
