Pickpocket John Jacob Turnstile is on his way to be detained at His Majesty's Pleasure when he is offered a lifeline, what seems like a freedom of sorts - the job of personal valet to a departing naval captain. Little does he realise that it is anything but - and by accepting the devil's bargain he will put his life in perilous danger. For the ship is HMS Bounty, his new captain William Bligh and their destination Tahiti.

From the moment the ship leaves port, Turnstile's life is turned upside down, for not only must he put his own demons to rest, but he must also confront the many adversaries he will encounter on the Bounty's extraordinary last voyage. Walking a dangerous line between an unhappy crew and a captain he comes to admire, he finds himself in a no-man's land where the distinction between friend and foe is increasingly difficult to determine....

A popular story retold brilliantly and originally.

At first look this is retelling of a familiar story. Bligh’s reputation has been reassessed more positively in recent years but the book doesn’t settle for easy comparison between him and Fletcher Christian, instead focussing on the fictional servant of Cpt Bligh. It’s an engaging and fascinating story and In Boyne’s hands even the scenes set adrift in a boat is full of beautifully observed moments. A joy.

The most riveting, exquisite book!

John Boyne is yet again,
an outstanding storyteller.
I have loved most of his audiobooks and each one is totally captivating. He dares to pick gritty subjects which he delicately exposes with emotion and humour in equal measures.
The Narrator is fantastic and switches between native accents effortlessly, creating a constantly changing atmosphere.
Without a doubt, this is Boyne’s best book yet. Thank you John, for many hours of sheer joy.

Third time and I still love this book

The intricacy of the language won’t spell bind you. The descriptions are neither poetic nor vibrant. However the characters created are so human, the adventure so epic that even on my third go on this story I’m left with butterflies. This is brilliant. Please read/listen. I miss the characters already.

What a superb narrator!

This is a gripping yarn, based rather loosely on The mutiny of the Bounty. How our hero gets his final job is a nonsense given that he had not one of the qualities required at that period to have this role. And many facts about tChristians behaviour on getting Bligh off the ship are omitted, as are facts about the court cases. But, if you’re willing to take this as a “story based upon…” then it’s a well written (as ever with Aboyne) and thrilling tale.

And did i mention the narrator is simply outstanding? OUTSTANDING!

There are at least two sides to every story!

I enjoy John Boyne’s work enormously - captivating storyteller. That said, I had avoided this particular book due to the subject matter. I had seen the classic film many years ago and though I had enjoyed it at the time had no desire to re-visit it. Eventually though, struggling to find a worthwhile listen I gave in and bought it just because JB rarely disappoints. So happy that I did. It’s a wonderful tale re-told with a significantly different spin on the main protagonists. I was enthralled - couldn’t stop listening and was hanging on every word from the fabulous narrator. Piers Hampton is in a league of his own; bringing every character to life with distinct voices and accents. Don’t know how he does it but I will be looking for other books narrated by him. I highly recommend this audible book.

A story worth retelling

I read this out of curiosity when I saw the title and the author. I think Mr Boyne saw the previous vilification of Bligh as unfair an used a fictional character to put things right… beautifully read… more acted!

Another epic tale by John Boyne

I did not think I would love this story as I did. At the start I thought I’d lose interest as I wasn’t drawn to a sailing adventure but once again Boyne got me and I was there on that launch with the 19 men sailing 4000kms with virtually no resources. Loved the relationships he crafted so well between characters, as he does. Brilliant!
