Dr. Charles Jirkovsky explores the music of ancient Israel from a musicological perspective. This book takes an academic approach in examining the instrumentation, notation, function, and tonality of music in the Bible.

©2023 Charles Jirkovsky (P)2024 Charles JirkovskyI’ve read several books on this topic before. This particular author excels because he has a strong background in BOTH music and religion. I found his language clear and easy to understand, and I learned a lot without it feeling like a painful textbook (though this certainly could be use as one - there are helpful charts and indices that would make this perfect for a worship studies, ethnomusicology or music history course). The author spent five years researching and writing this book and it shows if you’re at all interested in the history of music, this book is for you.
I read the paperback version of this book and then decided to listen to the audiobook. The audiobook was superior because there are musical recordings of some of the musical examples referenced in the book. It really helped me to picture what the author was writing about, and I enjoyed hearing the different styles of music and the way that they may have sounded in biblical times. Highly recommend!
A fascinating must-read for music lovers!
