Publisher's Summary

For fans of the New York Times best sellers The Last Punisher and Lone Survivor, a heart-pounding military memoir from a former Army Ranger sniper and Special Operations weapon sergeant turned journalist about the incredible highs and devastating lows of his career.

Growing up in small New York towns, Jack Murphy knew he wanted to lead a life far from the ordinary - a life of adventure and valor. After the 9/11 attacks, he immediately enlisted in the Army, knowing this was his chance to live the life he desired and fight for a cause he staunchly supported. After making it through the rigorous Ranger Indoctrination Program, he graduated sniper school and was promptly deployed to Afghanistan, where his experiences went from ordinary to extraordinary.

In this gripping military memoir, Murphy recounts the multiple missions he underwent as a Ranger, a Special Forces weapons sergeant, and ultimately, a boots-on-the-ground journalist. From enemy ambushes, dodging explosives, crashing terrorists’ weddings, and landing helicopters in the streets of Mosul, Jack provides a hard-hitting glimpse of what combat is like in some of the world’s most dangerous, war-torn places. With tours of duty in two of the most decorated units of the armed forces, Murphy brings a unique perspective to the military genre as he reflects on his great triumphs and shattering failures both on and off the battlefield.

Later, Murphy turned his attention to breaking news within the military. His stories have taken him from Iraq to Switzerland, from Syria to South Korea. From crossing Middle Eastern borders in the dead of night to rolling into an IED-laden zone, Murphy’s stories are always a thrill a minute.

Murphy’s Law tells a story of intense bravery and sacrifice - both on and off the battlefield.

An amazing non traditional memoir.

I have been a longtime Sofrep/Newsrep fan so admittedly I had high expectations. Murphy’s book surpassed my expectations. It’s real and raw, a solid depiction of the GWOT since post 9-11. Murphy offers a no holds barred look at the reality of the issues that plague the U.S. military while also giving praise when it is deserved. His foreign policy and political analysis of ongoing global conflicts is spot on and offers a unique first hand account of these conflicts. Highly recommended for military/political nerds like myself. A great read/listen. 10 out of 10.

Compelling

I had already read some of the stories Jack mentions in his book in articles on SOFREP and enjoyed them immensely, but hearing more of the background details and other experiences that have shaped him as an investigative journalist was worth every moment of listening to this book. It was great having him read his own book, because I am accustomed to his voice from various SOFREP Radio podcasts. I appreciate his forthright, matter-of-fact style of reporting, and that he works hard to be fair as a reporter even when he personally disagrees (and, more importantly, even when others strongly disapprove.) I’ve often found myself internally arguing, “Well, what about...” only to find that Jack addresses that very thing in the next paragraph. I don’t always agree with his perspective, but I value his insights and his approach to tackling difficult and interestingly complex subjects... and every bit of that came through in his book. Finally, it is refreshing to have a perspective of events happening here and abroad that takes a hard look at reality, instead of adhering to a polarized social-political narrative that demands facts fit the story... a habit of so many news reporters that has bothered me for decades. I look forward to the next chapter.

This book is different than all the others

Jack gives you a realistic look into the life of a soldier, not the glossed over version. The good with the bad. His stories kept my attention throughout the entire book. Equally as interesting, Jack shares his twists and turns as a journalist, going to some places most of us will never see because of how dangerous they are. I highly recommend this book!

"I am reality"

A no bullshit story that describes being a GWOT veteran better than any other. Jack's stark depiction of his world and transition from warrior to journalist is an all too familiar journey for many veterans of our era. His transition to a civilian life with the trials and tribulations that accompany it are a reality that so many within not only the special operations community but the military in general is something you will not read about in the glory bound books of others. If you want to read about heroic action-adventure look elsewhere and enjoy your blue pill, or read this and come face to face with the harsh reality of war and the human condition.

Honest, entertaining, and well written.

As a veteran and a human being, I truly enjoyed this book. It is an honest view showing aspects of the military and SOF community that aren’t often seen. This book has something for veterans, those contemplating military service, and those who have never served.

SAYING IT AS IT WAS

The reader spoke clearly and was easy to follow. A different view of the life of a soldier in a war zone is outlined . I was interested in the progression of the US forces on a modern battlefield to a, "checklist performance based reporting aimed at giving credibility to the writer whilst masking the reality". The concealing of sex offences by the military was also interesting. A good exposee'. Worth a listen.
