Publisher's summary

The Prodigal Son Mission on Mulberry Bend stands as a refuge for girls who otherwise would have to live by selling the only thing they have of value - themselves. The work being done there so impresses midwife Sarah Brandt that she volunteers to help out however she can - with clothes, with medical assistance, and with the organization of a benefit dinner. And when one of the girls is found dead and refused burial because of her former life, Sarah's passion for justice is aroused. Reluctantly, Sergeant Frank Malloy agrees to look into the death, if only to keep Sarah from endangering herself by pursuing the matter. But Sarah cannot be kept out of the investigation, and, just as Malloy feared, her attempts to find the cause of the unfortunate girl's death put her in deadly danger - from an unexpected source.

Great Mystery-Victoria Thompson Doesn't Disappoint

What did you love best about Murder on Mulberry Bend?

I loved that there were a number of suspects and I was kept guessing until the very end.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Murder on Mulberry Bend?

One of the most memorable moments is when I learned the truth behind the death of the spouse of one of Sarah's suitors.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

I didn't care for some of the expressions of emotion.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, but I spread it out over a few days. Even though it was really interesting, I had a problem with falling asleep, then waking up later with my headphones still on, and had to search back to the last part I remembered. This was cumbersome.

Any additional comments?

There was a defect in the audio output of this book, and I began hearing garbled voices in the background of the narrator during Chapter 5, then it quit working altogether. I kept skipping forward and discovered that the Chapters after that had no sound, until I reached Chapter 9. So I was unable to hear almost 4 Chapters at all, but I was able to figure out what I missed and finished listening to the rest of the book with no further glitches until the end. It was just really annoying at the time.

I just love this series!

The background story of Frank and Sarah is what has me hooked. I admit it wasn’t an instant connection as of Book 1, but I have grown to love the characters and I can’t wait to know what happens next in their lives.

Book 5 moved their story along nicely, but I wish it were a little faster!!! Of course the author does have to drag it out a little, we can’t get their ENTIRE story over and done with in one volume – we need a reason to keep coming back for more.

Being the impatient person I am, I want more and I want it NOW! I am diving into Book 6 right away.

Great story!

The story was great, I really love this series. However the narration was a bit robotic. There wasn’t a smooth reading. Thankfully I have the rest of the series in paperback, aside from one other book I had to purchase here.

Would be a great TV series!!

I'm hooked on this series! Mrs. Sarah Brandt--Victorian widow and midwife--donates clothes to a mission for wayward young women, only later to be asked by Sergeant Frank Malloy to identify one of them found dead in the New York City park. As Sarah's friend, he recognized her hat and suit on the dead woman. Thus starts the search for the killer.

I loved the twists and turns. Victoria Thompson is a wonderful writer!

Pronunciation

This is an enjoyable entry in the series. The narrator is usually competent, although her performance doesn't match how I imagined the characters. However, it was very jarring when the narrator blatantly and badly mispronounced a local street name, Houston, which was odd because other difficult names were correct.

Outstanding

Would you listen to Murder on Mulberry Bend again? Why?

Absolutely! The introduction of Sarah's 'soon to be' foster child really adds a new and very special addition to Ms Thompson's cast of characters.

Love the series.

As much as I am enjoying the series, I must admit Sarah was pretty clueless with this one. I had figured out the killer long before she did. Also it seems as if Sarah always just about is attacked by the killer in the last hour of the book.
Yes the narrator seems “mechanical “, however I do think she fits the story.
