Publisher's Summary

From award-winning male/male author Josh Lanyon: a librarian finds himself in a plot right out of one of his favorite mystery novels

Librarian Carter Matheson is determined to enjoy himself on a Scottish bus tour for fans of mystery author Dame Vanessa Rayburn. Sure, his ex, Trevor, will also be on the trip with his new boyfriend, leaving Carter to share a room with a stranger, but he can’t pass up a chance to meet his favorite author.

Carter’s roommate turns out to be John Knight, a figure as mysterious as any character from Vanessa’s books. His strange affect and nighttime wanderings make Carter suspicious. When a fellow traveler’s death sparks rumors of foul play, Carter is left wondering if there’s anyone on the tour he can trust.

Drawn into the intrigue, Carter searches for answers, trying to fend off his growing attraction toward John. But as unexplained tragedies continue, the whole tour must face the fact that there may be a murderer in their midst - but who?

Probably my favorite from this author!

I am a fan of most of Josh Lanyon's work. This might be my favorite yet. It was an interesting listen. Not just a mystery, not a romance. Like a lot of her work it's a good read that happens to have a gay protagonist.
The reader really drew me in and I believe it added to the enjoyment of the story. It takes place in Scotland which added even more.
I recommend it!

Entertaining mystery tour in Scotland with romance

Carter stubbornly refuses to give his expensive mystery tour ticket, booked years in advance, to his ex-lover Trevor to use for Vance, Trevor's new partner. Carter is still bitter a year after the breakup. Trevor and Vance are really obnoxious. It is always fun when there is an awful ex around in romance novels to hate. Carter gets an unexpected roommate for the tour. John, the roommate, acts suspiciously but Carter is attracted to him and John is attracted to Carter. Rumors fly that one of the passengers on the previous tour died. Then, a passenger on Carter's tour dies.

Good surprises in the mystery tour and a good new romantic partner for Carter. I really enjoy Josh Lanyon's novels.

Great book, great performance

Great book as usual, as expected from Josh Lanyon. I like John but I really love Carter. He is a different kind of sleuth. He is a librarian that loves his job and he can't stop his appetite for research. The book has a natural flow with a twist at the end.
I really hope that we will see more books with these characters.
This is the first book read by Gary Furlong that I listen to, and I'm looking forward to listen to more books read by him.
Overall a great experience.

Best Lanyon Mystery in a While

Mr. Lanyon put together a nifty little mystery in an homage to Dame Agatha Christie’s “Nemesis”. A new hero is created in the form of a librarian who sets out to see his mystery author hero. Characters are written to respond naturally to each situation and not much is forced. I appreciated the unusual structure of the story. With luck, Mr. Lanyon will create a new series based on his new sleuth.

Agatha Christie with a Lanyon Twist!

This is a great Lanyon mystery, and it kept my interest for the entire time. Gary Furlong did a superb job with the narration! There are more than eight main (side) characters, and they each had a distinctive voice. The only downside to the story was that the romance wasn’t as fleshed out as it could have been, it is a Lanyon novel so the mystery comes first obviously, but it was still adorable and fun.

Agatha Christie on the road

Would you try another book from Josh Lanyon and/or Gary Furlong?

Of course, I have found I can never pass by anything Lanyon writes - its always enjoyable. Gary Furlong is new to me and he did a good job I could easily tell which character was talking.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

No it was fine as is. It was just what I wanted - an escapist light read.

Which character – as performed by Gary Furlong – was your favorite?

Carter

Was Murder Takes the High Road worth the listening time?

Yes, it was.

Any additional comments?

This was, as I said, a light read and it was fun. It seemed to be a cross of And Then There Were None and If Its Tuesday It Must Be Belgium - cute.

Loved this book!

I am a Josh Lanyon fan, but I don't like all books equally however this is one of my favourites of Josh's. I've read it twice - first switching between reading and listening, the second time just listening to the audio version and I found it an engaging - and often humorous - experience. Carter is a great character, well aware of his flaws in the role of amateur sleuth and the other people on the trip with him were interesting in varied ways (some were awful!)
I really got drawn into the story, the narration was great and I just enjoyed the whole thing!

Very Enjoyable

Such an enjoyable listen! I loved the plots little twists and turns which were all added to by a smattering of holiday romance and snarky ex boyfriends.
Highly recommended if you want a light murder mystery with a little romance thrown in.

Perfect

Really enjoyed this. Everything a murder mystery should be. A classic tale in the fantastic old style with added humour and that touch of romance. Loved it.
