Publisher's Summary

He's come to kill me.

I'm a user and abuser of my own body. In the darkest hour I sold my soul to the devil and now I must pay the price. With his gun to my head I have no choice but to listen and obey, but I refuse to go down easily. Nothing is stronger than the will to survive. My instincts kicked into full gear the second he stepped into my motel room.

Except when I look at him I see my own heart staring back at me. A history tainted by blood.

I don't know his name, but I know he wants me. To save myself I'll sacrifice my sanity. My body. My soul. Something tells me the x-shaped scar that marks his eye is the only escape I have. He is Mr. X; the man who comes to claim my life. Can I save myself before he demands my heart?

Monsters are Real.

Where does Mr. X rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

First, I've just gotta say... WOW!!!!! Mr X is without a doubt my favorite audio book to date.

What did you like best about this story?

Eroticism at an extremely dark level.
I like the open ending where you can imagine what they each decide what to do.

Have you listened to any of Paul Brion’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is the first time I've had the pleasure.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

They made him a monster and left him to die..... soon they will all wish that he did....
Especially Her...........

Any additional comments?

The depravity, cruelty and sadistic abuse throughout this story had me constantly changing my mind about Mr X. He is decidedly dark, dangerous and wicked but oh my God he is so freaking delicious and decadent......

No Parent of the Year Awards Here

This is a dark story. Very explicit descriptions of violence and the S&M of BDSM. The story moves between present and past as it unfolds and draws you in from the beginning to the point of not being able to miss a single word.

I hung on every word and if I had an interruption I would rewind. For a 9.5 hour book to keep me interested...the story has to move at a steady pace, no filler, no irritating inner dialogue (or not much). Clarissa Wild delivered for me.

I'm not giving away any spoilers but I will tell you that X is in the family business of assassins and Jay is the daughter of a political family. The two families have a business arrangement, seduction takes place, disfigurement of X happens, X blames Jay for his disfigurement and seeks revenge. I can't think of a bad enough word or phrase to describe the parents of X and Jay.

Paul Brion gave a fabulous performance (narration) of this book. I loved the fact the he used a lower tone for Jay instead of trying to create a female voice.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes dark romances, mystery, suspense. Some people would say this isn't a romance book but dark romances are warped as is this one.

Absolutely worth the Credit and I will listen to this book over and over.

Wow! Just Wow!

Such a dark story. Not at all what I expected. Monster turned human? Emotionless to love? Games, killing, hits, survival, death, freedom. X and J are both very damaged and bent on furthering damaging each other. Somehow in the process the save each other. Who is the root of the problem? Can you guess? The last few chapters took my breath away, a sense of panic filling me. Why? Love where love shouldn't be. Freedom.
This was my first Clarissa Wild book and listening to it in Audio added to the tension and mystery, fear and a sliver of hope. I loved it!

Better than 50 Shades of Gray...

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

People whose are comfortable with sex scenes featuring humiliation, breath-play, biting and hitting hard enough to draw blood, and death threats. Granted, both characters are deeply damaged. The eventual explanations for their flaws are fairly reasonable, and by the end I wanted them to be together. I expected mystery, suspense, and kinky romance. The book delivers that, but the "romance" was too hateful and abusive for my tastes.

Would you ever listen to anything by Clarissa Wild again?

Maybe, if I were sure the "romance" wouldn't have so much mutual hatred.

What didn’t you like about Paul Brion’s performance?

It was okay, just not convincing. Some of the heroine's more peevish lines were like fingernails on a chalkboard.

Any additional comments?

For all the flaws, this author is much better at her craft than E. L. James. The plot and sub-plots, characters, and dialogue were better than 50 Shades. Furthermore, I'm pretty sure Ms. Wild didn't steal her characters from a YA vampire romance, so kudos for originality!

Freedom At What Price

I felt like I needed and eXorcism after listening to this book -- whew! Good story, so many bad people, sex that may or may not have been consensual with some BDSM, and a whole lot of killing and blood. Even with all the darkness, this story kept me captivated. There were a couple of times where the story dragged a little but overall it kept me interested in listening to the end. This is my first book by Clarissa Wild and I'm sure it won't be my last. Paul Brion did an okay job as the narrator for Mr. X and the other male characters but there was no differentiation for Jay's character so I had to really pay attention to know when she was speaking.

Azazel (aka Mr X) & Jay (aka Little Bird)

All you need to know about this story could be wrapped up in this quote from the book: "Her pain brings me pleasure and her pleasure brings me pain."

*****Spoiler Alert*****

Audible review. Dual POV. Book 1 of 7 in The Company series. Narrated by Paul Brion. He reads well but does not create character voices so it was a bit confusing at times. This story is, in my opinion, dark for absolutely no reason, and has absolutely no redeeming qualities. The constant time hops to the past made the story very disjointed and became very annoying. Trigger warnings: BDSM without a safeword, consent, or choice (handcuffs, ropes, varied gags, spanking w/hand & belt); biting until the skin bled & then licking/sucking the blood; breath play & choking; humiliation; lots of murders; no HEA.

Jay (aka Little Bird) suffers from an odd form of amnesia (one page she remembers her past with her parents and the next she has no recollection of her history with Mr X), is a stripper, prostitute, and drug addict (who is seemingly completely cured of her addiction within a few days). Mr X is a pierced, tattooed, scarred, one eyed hitman who is obsessed with getting revenge on Jay. When they were children his family of killers worked for her father and they were playmates until he accidentally bumped into her mom, knocking her down the stairs and killing her. His family was fired and eventually rehired but he was warned to stay away from Jay. Jay didn't know he was supposed to stay away from her and when they are caught together by her father, Mr X is dragged away and Jay hits her head. Jay is dropped off in another state with amnesia and Mr X is burned and loses an eye at his mother's hand as punishment for disobeying and losing the job a second time. After Mr X heals he searches and finds Jay and he begins his long term torment of her. Then a contract is placed within his company of hitmen to kill her and he takes her, makes a sex tape of the two of them, sends it to her father who releases it to the media, sets her father up with a prostitute, steals all of her father's money, kidnaps and tortures her father, shoots himself (for a reason that only makes sense to the author) and Jay kills her father. Mr X is taken to the hospital and Jay is taken into police custody. Jay has no idea if Mr X is alive or dead (how I still don't understand since the story takes place in 2013 and information is easy to find) and only has to serve community service for murdering her father "in self-defense" (I guess the police in this story didn't do much of an investigation). Then Jay gets an envelope placed in her hand giving her instructions to a PO Box that contains a postcard, a note, a passport with a new identity for her, and a bank card that when used reveals millions. The note reveals Mr X's real first name, that he split her father's money with her and his company (even though it made no sense to pay the company since she killed her father making his contract null), his location, and he gives her the choice to come to him. That's it, her choice isn't revealed. JP

Dark S/M and Little Confusing in the Beginning

Would you listen to Mr. X again? Why?

4.5 Stars - It was a good dark read, but not SO good that I'd listen to it more than once. It's credit worthy. It was confusing at first. The book is similar to "King" by T.M. Frazier; it has the same plot. Girl wakes up in the hospital with no memory of the abuse from her dad who's campaigning for governor. For those who have read the book "King" the only difference is the hero / lover is a hit man instead of a biker & the heroine' s abuser is her father instead of an ex boyfriend. Overall it's still a good read.

Any additional comments?

This is a dark S/M read (Not as dark as Pepper Winters books) but you'll need to listen to it with an open mind. Could be offensive to those who are sensitive to sadism & degradation.

Too dark for me..

The narrator was perfect for this story, I would have preferred a female narrator voice for the heroine (if you can call her that)..I just found it too dark, scenes were quite strong...I ended up skipping a lot of them, the ending was good I am so glad its over and this was not a series, I debated to finish since chapter 10 and if you are looking for a feel good story "this is not it"

Absolutely brilliant

This is a brutal storyline. Roth so many triggers I’d be careful if you don’t like it darker than dark. Luckily this is a perfect holiday read/listen for me. Amazing!
