In a mega-stakes, high-suspense race against time, three of the most unlikely and winning heroes Stephen King has ever created try to stop a lone killer from blowing up thousands.

In the frigid pre-dawn hours, in a distressed Midwestern city, hundreds of desperate unemployed folks are lined up for a spot at a job fair. Without warning, a lone driver plows through the crowd in a stolen Mercedes, running over the innocent, backing up, and charging again. Eight people are killed; fifteen are wounded. The killer escapes.

In another part of town, months later, a retired cop named Bill Hodges is still haunted by the unsolved crime. When he gets a crazed letter from someone who self-identifies as the "perk" and threatens an even more diabolical attack, Hodges wakes up from his depressed and vacant retirement, hell-bent on preventing another tragedy.

Brady Hartfield lives with his alcoholic mother in the house where he was born. He loved the feel of death under the wheels of the Mercedes, and he wants that rush again. Only Bill Hodges, with a couple of highly unlikely allies, can apprehend the killer before he strikes again. And they have no time to lose, because Brady's next mission, if it succeeds, will kill or maim thousands.

Mr. Mercedes is a war between good and evil, from the master of suspense whose insight into the mind of this obsessed, insane killer is chilling and unforgettable.

Blah

It was like watching an episode of the latest cop show. Retired detective gets a chance to solve the one that got away. Those books are a dime a dozen. It's okay but very disappointing when you are expecting classic Stephen King. I kept waiting for a twist or something. I should have read the synopsis before I
purchased.

I'm a big Stephen King fan, but....

What would have made Mr. Mercedes better?

A real plot.. that was easier to follow. I honestly couldn't even finish it. I'm not the type that feels "obligated" to finish a book once I start but, in most cases, I'll give it at least 1/3 of the way through. It was just exhausting to try and listen to this.. I'm sure I wouldn't have made it even this far if I were reading the book. I don't understand this as I'm a big Stephen King fan... maybe he was sick that day.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Right now, I'm listening to "Killing Reagan"

Did Will Patton do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

I honestly don't know... I just couldn't get interested in it at all.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Well, definitely disappointment.. as it did NOTHING to spark any interest whatsoever.

Any additional comments?

I know I only bought it with a credit but, just for the principle of it, I'd really like to return it.

Did King Jump the Shark?

The story tried to be suspenseful. But eneded up being rather thin with cardboard characters and predictable plot.

Too dark

I hated the sociopathic descriptions of killing. This is definitely not a light read. Killing children, dogs, people""&$(/$@

Average

As a fan of detective novels (specifically Jo Nesbo and Jussi Adler Olsen) I was on the hunt for a new crime series. I've never listened to/ read Stephen King novels so I came into Mr. Mercedes with an excited and open mind after all of the praise in the reviews.

Unfortunately, it fell flat. So I also feel obligated to review on audible and scratch my head here. What is the hype behind this book?!

To start, the main characters were so unlikeable and unrealistic it was hard to get behind them and root for their success. I also did NOT like the narrator and debated returning the book several times, due to his narration. Will Patton, at times, sounded like a rough, uneducated, mobster... Which didn't fit any of the characters.

I will say, my favorite part of the book was actually the antagonist! He had the most depth of any of the characters and provided the most suspense and intrigue by far.

If you are looking for a unforgettably thrilling detective series, this isn't it. If you are looking for an average summer beach read with a detective in it... Sure, this is your book.

Another run of the mill book

Would you try another book from Stephen King and/or Will Patton?

I keep trying to read Stephen King books and they all seem so generic.

What was most disappointing about Stephen King’s story?

I kept expecting this story to have an unexpected turn or something truly interesting, it just seemed to play itself out.

What about Will Patton’s performance did you like?

Patton kept me interested in that he had good character differentiation.

Doesn't keep me interested

The narration is full as well as the story line. It is difficult to stay focused with or without the narration.

Not as good as other works by Stephen

Was just ok... I have enjoyed many of his other books more. I suppose I wanted more suspense and intrigue than there was.
