Publisher's summary

Based on a true story, rediscover an extraordinary story with ordinary roots.

Thomas and Othello Fraction are brothers and best friends who had heard, and let no one forget, that they were descendants of an African nobleman whose tribal scars looked like tiger stripes. But here they were in America, considered three-fifths of a person, and fighting two battles: one for the nation and one for themselves. Hear the story that leads up to a “guns drawn” standoff, and learn how the Fraction family came to America, contributed to the Civil War, survived murder attempts on their lives, and eventually settle outside of Blacksburg, Virginia, as Southern refugees.

Exciting Compelling and Based on the Truth

Mosley- Hobbs has masterfully brought us into the presence of her family history and their struggle for freedom, personhood and dignity. Her characters are as vivid as their circumstances albeit love and protection for the family or terror exacted by the enslavers in all their complexities. Had I the stamina to listen straight through I would have. It was difficult to stop the narrative and do anything else. The narrator is brilliant and respectful of the piece he performs. I am anxiously waiting for another work from this brilliant author and historian. Don’t miss this one!
