Firefly Valley chewed me up and spat me out. I’m only back to help Mum. That’s it. Clean up the house, fix what needed fixing, and leave before the town drags me into their gossip. I have no interest in reconnecting. I left Firefly in the rearview mirror for a good reason.

I am not the only lost soul trying to make sense of life. Nick is an outsider, determined to confront where everything went wrong. He sees me. Not the baggage. Not the whispers about my past. Just me. Silence feels a little less lonely when he’s around.

I go camping to find some peace and quiet. Nick surprises me by tagging along. Somewhere between swimming butt-naked under the stars and sharing a sleeping bag, I find a reason to stop running from the pain of my past. Good news, nobody got eaten by a bear.

I thought I had put this damned town behind me. It’s still waiting with open arms.
