JAMES BOND INVESTIGATES A VILLAIN WITH THE POWER TO LAUNCH A NUCLEAR WARHEAD
Sir Hugo Drax is a multimillionaire tycoon and war hero, revered by the British public for his new Moonraker missile defense system. But there’s more to this enigmatic millionaire than he lets on. When M suspects Drax of cheating at cards, he is baffled that the patriot would risk his reputation and his rocket program on a game, so he assigns Bond to infiltrate Drax’s circle.
As 007 probes the activities at the Moonraker base in the days leading up to the beloved rocket’s maiden launch, he learns the truth about Drax’s battle scars, his wartime allegiances—and his murderous plans for the deployment of Moonraker.

In truth, were it not for the fact that this 50's era topic is so timely today, I would have given this book a soft four stars. Though not terribly well written, #moonraker , the third novel on the #jamesbondseries by #ianfleming had many pulpy and disposable passages. The romantic set-up felt stilted and quite unnecessary as the story plays out over too short a window of time to make Bond's affections as deeply set as the story implies. But the set up is perfect as Bond does a solid for M's favorite private London men's gambling club where the manager suspects the new money darling, the CEO of a rare earth mining enterprise dealing in rare earth minerals who has pledged his fortune to head up England's missile program out of his own pocket, is also a despicable card cheat. Over high stakes bridge Bond confirms those suspicions and makes it clear to Hugo Drax, England's new favorite song, that he's aware of his double dealing ways.
Thus is Moonraker launched and, of course, the Bond villain turns out to be just as sinister as Bond and undercover Scotland Yard policewoman Gala Brand set out to uncover and to ferret out what Sir Drax has up his sleeve, other than marked cards of course. As it is set in the Cold War, both Russian Communists and Nazi Werewolves hover in the shadows intending to thwart England's nuclear ambitions as world influence and political dominance has shifted our of Old Europe to America where "the bomb" isn't just an untested aspiration. As I said, were it not for the fact that Drax proves to be an uncanny influence for a contemporary Rocketeer flush with mining money, this would just be decent Cold War spy noir.
Chillingly, it is so much more!
The Audible read by #alexkingston of #drwho and #er fame is absolutely perfect! She appears to be the official reader of the Bond Series and perfectly expressive.
