This was an interesting story about a naive young sualwet ocean dweller.Nilafay is kidnapped and endures mistreatment by the sualwets enemies.She struggles to endure and make a life for herself.I really didn't like how naive Nilafay was.The narrator used a whiney voice to portray her which I found incredibly irritating.I received an audiobook from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Moody, evocative, beautiful and horrifying

We start the story with happy, almost dreamlike sequences of young mermaid Nilafay reflecting on her love and upcoming nuptials. She can't be more than a teenager, and her life is sweet, even though she feels it chafes her...

Then she ventures out somewhere she shouldn't. She's captured. Things are done to her. Things that happen to captured enemy spies in movies and TV series. Cold-blooded calculating people, trying to use her for their ends. Nilafay's innocence is gone. What will take its place?

This is a prequel to a story I haven't read, but that didn't matter. It is a strong story on its own. The author's world-building is wonderful. I especially like the idea of merpeople not having any hair. It has logic. They wouldn't need it underwater.

If you like the poetry of the sea and the sky above it, you'll like Nilafay's world for sure. By the end, you'll like silly young Nilafay too.

Doesn't feel like a short story

So many short stories leave me feeling unsatisfied because there just isn't a lot of space to get to know the characters and weave an interesting plot at the same time. As I was reading this, I became immersed in the story but I was doubtful that the author would be able to produce a satisfactory ending in the time that was left. I was wrong. The ending came at the perfect moment and did not disappoint. The narrator did a good job on both the female and male voices, with the exception of Sera. Sera sounded strangely out of place, almost like a cartoon character. But I like a female narrator who can voice men without sounding ridiculous (and vice versa) and this one can. I enjoyed this and will probably look for some of the longer books by the same author.

Atmospheric scifi

This short book starts out with beautiful atmospheric overtones and a setting that reminded me of Hans Christian Anderson's The Little Mermaid. All is definitely not right in paradise, though, and the main character, a mer-type woman named Nila, finds herself embroiled in a cultural war.

I loved the setting here, and the complexity of the world-building. I definitely wasn't expecting the twists, and they deepened the scope of the world. I'd love to know more of its history, its culture, and why the people in this world do the things they do. (To say more would go into spoilers!)

Some of the situations Nila encountered, though, were a bit triggery to me. Without going into details or giving spoilers, what's explored here is powerful, but intense.

Overall, though, a good short read!

Moon dust?

Don't understand the title of this book in comparison to the story. This story seems to be about mermaids and mermen living under the sea and how ones life changes with in instant because of one decision. Although I did enjoy the story. It also makes you realize our decisions will always change the future of our children.

Top 50 percent. It was a good short story.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Nilafay of course. The story centers around her life and the trouble she gets into. It was sad to see her innocence taken away.

What aspect of Karen Rose Richter’s performance would you have changed?

The story was well thought out and imagined. We must remember though, that this is the type of story that can anger the reader. I am a father to a daughter, so the whole imagining of the main character losing their innocence provokes strong emotions.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Every decision made in life can affect the future!
