Publisher's summary

When the voice of authority calls, Tony Hawkin assumes there is a glitch. After all, why would the nation possibly require the services of a man who runs the gift shop in the FBI building? But there's no mistake, and soon Tony finds himself in the middle of Mexico, pursued by a ruthless killer, and hot on the trail of a priceless work of art. He has to find the painting, determine its authenticity, and return it safely to Washington. There's only one problem: everybody wants this particular painting. Now Tony must summon all his wits and courage to outsmart the forces of international espionage - tracking down the painting was easy, escaping the clutches of the KGB, the Mafia and Mossad is more than he bargained for. And then there's the man, the one with a predilection for guns and sharp knives. Suddenly, all Tony can think of is the warm comfort of his shop in DC, and the sound of small voices: "Hey, mister, how much for the chocolate handcuffs?" Will he ever see those little faces....

Good, well planned and fun

This was a well planned spy thriller. An ordinary man pulled into intrigue and comes out the other side. Main character was for lack of a better term, average he did not have extraordinary skills, or luck, he could have almost been replaced by anybody reading the story. Looking forward to the next in the series.

slow start.

I've got most of Harry Harrison's sci-fi/fantasy books and I love how they mix humor and action. Mr Harrison is a grandmaster of sci-fi! This book was slow and plodding with a number of holes that I, a non-experienced crime-mystery reader, could discern. the end was satisfactory tied up loose ends. I wish I had listened to this book before I acquired the whole series. Never thought I would say this but I do NOT recommend this book by Master Harrison.

Surprising!

I am usually solidly in the scifi/fantasy corner of the book world, but this book was recommended to me and it was free so I figured why not. The narrarator has a wonderful presentation style. He doesn't go over the top giving each character an individual voice, but his mannerisms and inflections are more than enough to convey individuality in the characters. He also seems to have an impressive grasp on various languages and accents. Enough to impress me anyway, although I admit I'm probably easier to impress than some. The story itself was engaging. The plights of the world's most unlucky FBI agent out on his first mission drew me in enough that I started getting anxious on his behalf, and before I knew it a vibrant story was unfolding and I wasn't able to stop listening. I don't know what you like in a story; I need humor, a clever plot that pulls you in, and in an audiobook I need a narrarator who isn't a monotone or I will drift right out of the story and into my own thoughts. If that sounds like you I highly recommend this book. I even recommend it if you're usually adverse to historical fiction set, because I 100% am and I was still enthralled in the story. If you're in an audibles rut, either because you can't find a book you want or you're out of credits and don't have the disposable income for anything on your wishlist, listen to a couple chapters of this book and you may find yourself as pleasantly surprised as I was.
