Publisher's summary

When friends join ex-soldier Jonah on a European vacation, they discover that the beautiful German town where he was once stationed is now completely vacant. But the strangeness doesn’t end there. One of their group falls into a coma, another sees a strange creature, and large mounds of dirt appear everywhere.

Before they can determine just what is happening, Jonah realizes that something very deadly is watching from the shadows, waiting to hunt them. The pleasant vacation turns into absolute terror as Jonah and his friends struggle to survive.

But what they stumble across in the depths of an abandoned military base threatens not only their lives, but also all of mankind.

Different Take in the Apocalyptic Genre

This played out like the typical zombie apocalypse story but without zomibes. Quite frankly I think I would have preferred zombies because the molters were never really explained to my satisfaction. I liked the concept and think there is a lot that can be further explained but they seemed more of a backstory to the overall struggle to survive in the apocalypse story.

As far as the characters went I really didn’t like the main character, Jonah. Dishonorably discharged from the military for drinking and while he has the skills of a trained soldier he wasn’t in long enough for me to believe he was some super survivor. Things seemed to be too convenient for him and it seemed his only real struggle was alcoholic demons which brought out the worst in him. I found myself drawn to more of the other characters in the story over him. I appreciated him growing throughout the story but that is to be expected.

The premise and plot of the story were great. Had some feel of some late night horror movie and I’m totally into those. I just wish there was more substance to this versus the standard apocalypse story. I thought this had a lot of potential that was unrealized. These style stories either focus on the internal human struggle or the external survival in a world of monsters, I don’t think this one did either above and beyond, which is needed to stand out amongst the crowd. I think this was left open for another book so hopefully that one will have more about the molters and answer some of my questions.

The narrator did a fantastic job. I really enjoyed every aspect of his narration especially his deep voice. He had great subtle character voices that really helped bring the story to life. As this was the first time I have listened to him I hope to hear more in the future.

Well written Sci-Fi/Horror

Very nice start to the series. The Molters are very original in the processes that is undergoes. It goes very in-depth into how they evolve. Great post-apocalyptic story highly recommended.

The narrator was excellent. This was my first book narrated by him. I am already listening to book 2 and so far it has been great.

I requested a free review copy of this audiobook and I am leaving a voluntary and honest review.

Travel Apocalypse

'Molters' really went for it, and that's something I always appreciate. I'm not certain that what Gleason was going for was 100% accomplished, but the story is fun and interesting nonetheless. There were some gaps in the plot that were difficult to over look and I never got a full picture on what the monster really was. I'm not sure I would recommend this one, but it certainly wasn't a terrible listen! David Drummond delivers a good performance.

Molters

I don't like leaving bad reviews. This book is not good. None of the characters are likeable. The only good thing about this book is the narrator. I received this audio book for free through Audiobook Boom for my unbiased review.

A different kind of apocalypse

This story was different and is a bit sci-fiish. There are references to the molters evolving from something on Earth, although, that is only speculations by the main character, Jonah. He's an ex soldier and when bodies start piling up he takes charge. He's forced to or die. There's a long string of characters in the book and it could almost be divided into two separate books in a series.

The story had a good flow. The narrator matched my thoughts of the main character and it had enough suspense to intrigue me. It also has a fair amount of death. In a situation like Jonah faces death would be unavoidable. I don't normally have problems with character dying anyways but in this case it fits well. There are a few heroic moments for Jonah as he attempts to slay the molters that keep his life on edge.

Overall, I really enjoyed it and would reccomend it to anyone who enjoys zombie/apocalyptic type books and movies.

Stars slow then picks up

This book is about 3.5 starts but I rounded up.

It started slow and I didn’t really care about the characters at first. Which is bad for a survival tale, they get a little better but can be kind of annoying.

Molters

Introduction:
Greetings once more, fellow explorers of the written word! It's your trusty Furry alpha lone male Ice Wolf, Kiba Snowpaw, bringing you a review from the icy heart of HowlStrom. Today, we're venturing into the pages of "Molters" by Clint Gleason, a story that sent shivers down my furry spine.

Basic Plot Summary:
Imagine a European vacation that turns into a nightmare - that's precisely what happens when ex-soldier Jonah and his friends visit a seemingly abandoned German town. The town, once lively, is now eerily vacant. But that's just the beginning of their woes. One of their group falls into a coma, bizarre creatures appear, and mysterious mounds of dirt sprout everywhere. As the group grapples with the inexplicable, Jonah realizes that a deadly presence lurks in the shadows, ready to hunt them down. Their vacation quickly transforms into a harrowing struggle for survival. But what they discover in an abandoned military base threatens not just their lives but all of humanity.

Characters:
Our protagonist, Jonah, begins as an unlikable and irresponsible egomaniac. Manipulative and self-centered, he makes us feel sorry for his friends. However, as the story progresses and danger looms, Jonah undergoes a remarkable transformation. He matures and learns responsibility, making his character arc quite engaging.

Structure:
The story starts a bit awkward and simple but gains momentum as the plot unfolds. While it begins with an unlikable protagonist, it keeps the reader engaged as the character evolves.

Impact:
"Molters" excels in delivering chills and keeping readers on the edge of their seats. It's a tale that explores personal growth amidst a nightmarish scenario, leaving you with a message to ponder.

Hook and Thesis:
The story begins with an intriguing premise: an abandoned town with ominous occurrences. While the initial chapters may seem awkward, the thesis emerges as the protagonist's journey from irresponsibility to maturity.

Praise:
The book offers an interesting monster design and incorporates the author's military experience effectively. Additionally, the character Bernard's intro scene stands out.

Critique:
The first 40% of the book could have been condensed, as the callbacks and explanations made it repetitive. Character descriptions, except for certain body parts, are lacking. Character interactions feel forced and lack emotional depth.

Conclusion:
"Molters" is a chilling read that starts slow but gains momentum, much like a snowball rolling down a hill. The transformation of the protagonist adds depth to the story. If you can overlook the initial awkwardness, you'll find a tale that keeps you engaged and pondering its underlying message.

Comparison:
While not a literary masterpiece, "Molters" distinguishes itself with its exploration of personal growth amid a supernatural crisis. It may not be for everyone, but it has its moments of intrigue.

So, my fellow readers and adventurers, as we bid farewell to this eerie journey, remember that even in the coldest of winters, growth can thaw the iciest hearts. Stay frosty, and may your next literary adventure be as thrilling as a HowlStrom blizzard!

Molters review

It was a good thing I started off with part one instead of part three like intended. Was this interesting and enjoyable, yeah, absolutely, with likeable characters and writing. Now onto the other two parts.
