Publisher's Summary

In a world full to bursting with would-be heroes, Jim couldn't be less interested in saving the day. His fireballs fizzle. He's awfully grumpy. Plus, he's been dead for about 60 years. When a renegade necromancer wrenches him from eternal slumber and into a world gone terribly, bizarrely wrong, all Jim wants is to find a way to die properly, once and for all.

On his side, he's got a few shambling corpses, an inept thief, and a powerful death wish. But he's up against tough odds: angry mobs of adventurers, a body falling apart at the seams and a team of programmers racing a deadline to hammer out the last few bugs in their AI.

Mogworld is a comic fantasy novel in the tradition of Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett, and is the debut novel from video-game icon Yahtzee Croshaw (Zero Punctuation).

"The first legitimate breakout hit from the gaming community in recent memory" ( Boing Boing)
"Yahtzee consistently makes me laugh, and even though I dig computer and electronic games, he has cross-genre appeal to anyone who enjoys a sharp wit, unique sense of humor, and plenty of originality - not purely gaming fans" ( The Future Buzz)

Yahtzee learns to enunciate

I bought this for the same reason almost every one else purchased it for, I'm a fan of Zero Punctuation. On his blog, Yahtzee wrote that it was really hard to learn to speak slowly again and if you listen to the audio sample you can tell. The narration early on is stilted, as if he's trying to compensate. Likewise, the humor in the beginning is strained and trying too hard. He tends to reuse and abuse his metaphors, and over use words such as "insanely" and "suddenly". Sadly, these and other technical problems appear throughout the book.

However, if you love Yahtzee and are prepared to be both patient and forgiving, this book will reward you in the end. And by patient I mean you need to get through at least the first 3 hours. By that time, Yahtzee's voice has warmed up and the story picks up enough to let the jokes occur more naturally. The main character is endearing and the story amusing and involving. Yahtzee does a good necromancer voice too, though my favorite voice was Slippery John. The ending was appropriately poignant.

This book is better than other first novels by game designers (it made me think of Johannes Cabal: Necromancer). Yahtzee hasn't ascended to the pantheon with Pratchett and Douglas Adams but I will pick up his other book and hope for more author narrated audio books from him in the future.

Better than I could have hoped for

As a fan of Zero Punctuation, I went into Mogworld thinking I knew what to expect: a parody full of whip-sharp language and colorful similes. What I didn't expect was the honestly brilliant metanarritive about how video games are made, played, and perceived, woven into an unusual but engaging adventure story. The plot was refreshingly original, the characters were distinct and memorable, and the world felt right, just familiar enough to me, as someone who's played a lot of sword and sorcery RPGs. It was definitely the right choice to have Yahtzee narrate the story, because he imbues it with so much personality. Overall, a joy to listen to. Five stars.

Listened to this twice in a row - lotsa fun!

The premise is great - a former magic college student killed by a rival warrior university is raised 60 years later to be the undead minion of an evil Necromancer. Turns out the Necromancer is a great boss and the new walking corpse, Jim, comes to enjoy working in the Doom Fortress...until it's destroyed, with Jim and two other minions the only ones to escape.

Thus begins their quest.

The cast of characters, to me, were un-freaking-believably entertaining. I even loved the villains.

Also, the narrator was really something. At first, I was a little disconcerted since he so unconventional compared to others on audible. But after a few chapters, I found he was perfectly suited to bring to life the various characters. Then I discovered the narrator is also the author, so of course he had things well in hand - just took some getting used to.

Highly recommended

Loved the story, but the audio quality is was lacking

Loved the story. It was fun and an original take on a story you have heard before.

The audio quality was lacking. Volume went up and down. You could here the pages be turned in the background. The narrators tone was periodically off, like he had just started the recording after a long day at the office and he just wanted to sit down and have a beer.

It’s a shame. The story was enjoyable and the narrator in most places did a good job, there were just enough issues that it took I out of the story.

LMAO!!!

If you like Monty Python that you will love this audio book. I've listened to this book many times and it still cracks me up. The author/narrator does a fantastic job of creating unique voices for each character. Makes it feel more like a radio play than an audio book.

Funny and Enjoyable

What made the experience of listening to Mogworld the most enjoyable?

Totally different, something you wouldn't expect.

What other book might you compare Mogworld to and why?

No other book that I have read is like Mogworld.

Have you listened to any of Yahtzee Croshaw’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Laugh mostly. Got a little tedious near the end.

Any additional comments?

Gives you a little laugh, a chuckle here and there. Something that is totally different and unusal. Love the "gang" and their witty comments.

Absolutely

Hands down, this is the funniest book I have ever had the pleasure to read or listen to.

I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the fantasy genre. Not only did I enjoy it, this is the only book to my memory which made me actually laugh. And when I say laugh, I don't just mean a dry chuckle or smirk - I am referring to a big full belly laugh.

With this book Mr Croshaw has made myself a fan of his work.

What fun!!!

I'm a big Z Punc fan. When I heard Yahtzee had done a narration of his book I had to have it. I finished it in a couple of days. If you enjoy Terry Pratchett, John Scalzi, or enjoyed Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, chances are you will enjoy Mogworld. If you are also a fan of Crowshaw's reviews you'll appreciate the additional level of humor.

Great story read by the author.

Would you consider the audio edition of Mogworld to be better than the print version?

Yes, because author's sense of humor shows even better when you hear it in his voice inflections.

Have you listened to any of Yahtzee Croshaw’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes. It was of the same caliber to his better works.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

If you have the time.

Fantastic story and narration after first hour.

Love zero punctuation, and you may feel a little short changed if you wanted a 13 hour equivalent. You instead get a 12 hour roller coaster of amazing one liners and set pieces, after the slow scene setting starting hour.

First 20 minutes is not terribly interesting while setting the scene, Jim is not particularly likeable for first 40 ish. After that you get introduced to more characters and the dynamic of their relationships and the crazy world fits perfectly.

Odd hearing Yahtzee do the different accents and genders,, but he gets it spot on and listening to the 10 ish main characters is great fun.

Very intelligently pieced together fantasy story meets real mmo gaming experience. Had to pull my van over listening to a scene with Mr. Wonderful ( won't spoil it) or end up rear ending someone in fits of laughter.

Interesting enough story and plenty for the gamers

Having followed Yahtzee for a little while through his game reviews i was quite curious to see how his humor would translate through into a novel. I'm pleased to say that it does, mostly. Yahtzee himself narrates which really does help a lot as I'm not overly sure it would have worked as well had anyone else done so.

All the characters are interesting if nothing else, and the interaction between all the 'mains' is really great and the side characters that pop up are always entertaining.

I think the biggest let down was the story itself. I cant help but feel i might have enjoy the story that could have been, more then the story i got. I don't really want to spoil anything, but i could have quite happy stayed in Act 1 throughout. But alas that wasn't the story he was telling.

My Girlfriend and i are both gamers and really did enjoy the references along the way, but I'm not sure how well that would translate to a non gamer.

If you like Discworld...

Then you'll probably like this! Yahtzee Croshaw voices his own novel about a young mage who generally has a terrible time of life. I won't include any spoilers but it's not ground-breaking stuff with regards to the storyline but it's an enjoyable listen and I'm looking forward to spending my hard-earned credits on his next one which I assume he's currently narrating his way through!

More please Yahtzee :)

Listen at 1.5x speed

For those who know the author's rapid-speaking games reviews, the 1x speed narration is horrendously slow. Other than that, easily fixed by a speed increase, this is an engaging and very imaginative story. Easy listening humour without assuming too much knowledge of MMORPGs.

Nothing Short of Brilliant!

If you could sum up Mogworld in three words, what would they be?

Funny, engaging and original.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Mogworld?

There were no real memorable moments but I really liked the character, Meryl, as we all know someone like this in real life (even if she was more a caricature of those people).

I can't speak highly enough of this book. It takes a lot to make me laugh aloud and I've only experienced it a few time with books - even Terry Pratchett only made me laugh once - yet I laughed aloud several times and snickered inwardly a lot while listening to this book. It is well worth a listen.

Have you listened to any of Yahtzee Croshaw’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I had never heard of Yahtzee Croshaw before and to look him up on Google. I am not a big fan of an author narrating his/her own work as narration and writing are completely different skills but Yahtzee did an excellent job throughout.

Any additional comments?

The mixture of humor, adventure, MMORPG themes and funny (yet believable in the context of the book) characters was very enjoyable. I'm new to the whole MMORPG theme in literature so don't know if this is truly an original book or not but it was original for me. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will definitely listen to the 2 other books on audible by this author.

Excellenty refreshing

Didn't want to put it down. Takes a refreshing perspective on the fantasy fiction genre and should get some appreciative smiles and nods from any members of the gaming community.
Yhatzee's narration complemets the honest, dry humor perfectly and flows with steady pace and rhythm resulting in full immersion in the story. Good stuff!

Don't wait for the sale

This is Yhatzee Croshaws first book but I listened to it after the third one followed by the second one. To be perfectly honest I only bought his third book, which was my first one, Will Save The Galaxy For Food, because it was in the sale, but as soon as I finished it I bought his other three. Listened to this one without reading the description and loved every minute of it. Had to listen tona few bits twice as I have a terrible habit of falling asleep listening to books and only waking when the tangled headphone wires begin to restrict my breathing, but that's more about me than Mr Croshaw. Anyway I will start Differently Morphuos tomorrow and am sure it will be as good as the rest. Thank you Mr Croshaw you wonderful human you.

Really entertaining

A fun comedy adventure set in a fantasy world starring a bitter, sarcastic, undead protagonist and his annoying companions as they set out on a world-saving quest and discover a hidden truth about their world. The story uses a few elements and tropes from RPGs for both the story and many of the jokes, so some knowledge of these helps when getting into this book. The story itself is fairly good, although some plot twists are visible from a mile off and the characters themselves can take a long time working this out. One scene in particular fairly early on will probably clue in most listeners to a major plot point that isn't properly revealed until later, but it didn't detract from my enjoyment.

As for the narration, Yahtzee is fantastic here, with the voices he gives the characters adding to their charm - special mentions going to Slippery John, a thief who aptly manages to steal every scene he's in, and Mr. Wonderful, an insane assassin with a massive self-harming problem.

This is a book I'll be coming back to again and I can highly recommend it to anyone wanting a fun light story.

Great story. Terrible narration

This is a fun book with an entertaining story but narration is truly awful. The reader sounds like a student reading nervously to the class, trying to make sure each word is pronounced properly and completely ruining the timing of the story and the jokes.

2.5 stars if I could

I couldn’t finish this book because I found myself getting bored and confused and stopped caring how it would end (only had about 3 hours left). It did make me laugh out loud a few times though especially closer to the beginning. Think it’s more suited to gamers who get all the in jokes.
