Publisher's summary

In Modern Mindfulness, Rohan Gunatillake argues that to lead more mindful, calm, and happy lives, switching off is the last thing we need to do. Instead he gives listeners ideas, principles, and techniques to bring awareness, composure, and kindness to whatever they are doing. Filled with over 60 practical exercises, the author's mobile mindfulness approach gives the benefits of meditation to even the busiest of lives.

Ideas from Modern Mindfulness:

  • Learn to fade out instead of just falling asleep
  • Learn to watch TV mindfully (yes, it's possible!)
  • Make mobility part of mindfulness (we're always on the move!)
  • Use technology for good instead of evil (no need to do a digital detox)
  • Learn to "whack-a-thought" and stay centered

Unexpectedly outstanding

I was a little surprised by how good this book is. The author teaches the reader how to use mindfulness/meditation in everyday life. This includes practice in everyday settings. I have used several of these suggestions to bring my mind back to the present and to slow my brain to the speed of life. I highly recommend this book to anyone needing to be more present.

Wonderful content, monotone voice puts me to sleep

This book is full of great information, and wonderful insight. I really enjoyed it, When I could concentrate enough on every word. While it is obvious the author is passionate about the subject, the monotone nature of the boys allowed me to tune it out as background noise more often than not. Therefore I had a very difficult time getting through this entire book. The softness and calmness of his voice was really good for the exercises portion of the book. Perfect for actually practicing meditation. However, I feel like I missed a good portion of good information because I completely zoned out nearly every time I I started to listen.

Much needed thoughtfulness

Grateful for the audio format of this work. It allowed me to begin the practice of some basic skills immediately, and hooked me on the benefits right away. This had the perfect balance of practicality, lightheartedness, insight, and history I needed to get a strong foothold on mindfulness. The author also teaches well, with patience and understanding. Perfect book for the beginning meditator, and perfect adaptation of practices to be done in this modern age of technology, and constant motion.

For newbies

being somebody who has read several books on mindfulness, I've found this book to be kind of boring. However I do think that if you are somebody new to practicing mindfulness and need a step by step guide, this is great!

Terrific Listen

Any additional comments?

I loved this audiobook and just ordered the paperback as well so that I can better capture the structure of his approach which is never easy in an audiobook without chapter headings. Listening to Rohan Gnatilake is a pleasure in and of itself. I could listen to him all day - which in fact I did on a long and stressful road trip.

Gnatilake's approach is different in that he doesn't believe that mindfulness practice needs to be limited to sitting meditation, to be expressly linked to a spiritual tradition, or only the purview of those with a lot of time or access to some exotic nature setting. He writes for those of us to live and work in the modern, high-demand, fast-paced, and technology-connected world. Gnatilake also strikes a balance in his approach to technology - suggesting ways of using it to support mindfulness without turning a blind eye to its dark and sometimes additive nature.

One of Gnatilake's stated goals is to make mindfulness practice attractive to those without an orientation to spiritual practices. He does this very well and, by not framing this within a spiritual tradition per se, makes the presentation of the information non-threatening to those who are uncomfortable moving outside of their own religious belief-system.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning about mindfulness and its application in daily life.
