"Call me Ishmael." Thus starts the greatest American novel. Melville said himself that he wanted to write "a mighty book about a mighty theme" and so he did. It is a story of one man's obsessive revenge-journey against the white whale, Moby-Dick, who injured him in an earlier meeting. Woven into the story of the last journey of The Pequod is a mesh of philosophy, rumination, religion, history, and a mass of information about whaling through the ages.Download the accompanying reference guide.Public Domain (P)2005 NAXOS AudioBooks Ltd. Wow! Has to be the greatest American novel ever written; and Melville couldn't have done it without Hootkins. Funny, philosophical, so much deeper than I ever imagined; and most of it I would have missed if I had read it myself. Thank you Mr. Hootkins!

William Hootkins!

I've tried reading Moby Dick a handful of times and always got bogged down in Melville's endless minutiae about whales and whaling. It would put me to sleep quicker than an ambien.

I will never recommend this book in any way other than in audio book form, read by William Hootkins. Seriously, he's so good at bringing this book to life and it was clear that he understood the subtle humor in the interactions between the characters.

I don't think it's necessarily to review the actual book here, if you don't know about Moby Dick there are much better places to learn about it than in an Audible review. I just had to comment on how brilliantly Mr. Hootkins performed on this project.

A Masterpiece of Narration

I loved the book and the way the voice actor told the story. The only criticism I have for Amazon Audible is that it would have been great if the chapters were organized according to the book instead of time intervals of an hour plus. To stop and find your place in the book was difficult because of that.

Classic

You know what will happen, so that is not why you read the book. This book paints so much detail that you will know every character and so much about whales that you will feel every emotion. The performance is one of the best I've listened to. Not your normal listen though.

A finely narrated mural

Voice actor overacts but for the content it woks really well. Definitely recommend. Great way to finally read a literary classic.

Wow!!

The narrator delivered a great performance, bringing humor and captivating me into this story. The style that Moby Dick is written presents with some interesting techniques where one section will make you feel like you're in a Shakespearean monologue, then other's in a layman's encyclopedia, followed by a Preacher's sermon or an allegory about life. I enjoyed every minute of this experience, and would love to do it again!

If you could sum up Moby Dick in three words, what would they be?

This is a massive book, with some obscure parts. The Reader illuminates all parts of the book. I have read Moby Dick many times, but the performance brings it to vivid life.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The scene where Ahab ties the crew to his mad pursuit is brilliantly told.

The Reading Transforms It

I will read it again next year. And every year.
It was part of my bucket list books-I-always-meant-to-read, but it exceeded every expectation. Wonderful book, great performance.

One of the best audio books ever.

The story is a look into the past, and the reader has so much passion in his voices and characters. I'm going to buy every book he narrates.

Fantastic performance on a classic book!
