Publisher's Summary

A Valuable Resource

I especially enjoyed Matt Clayton's sharp critiques of the Greek, Roman and Norse authors who provided her source material as well as her skillful ability to merge details from several different versions of most of the legends into seamless, compelling stories. Scholarly and yet accessible to the general reader, this book is absolutely essential reading for anyone who is interested in understanding the roots of Western civilization.

A Classic of Mythology Research

I first read this amazing collection as a high school student interested in Greek and Roman mythology. Now, as a teacher of English at the high school level myself, I have re-read and recommended this book to a great many students. For someone wanting to delve deeper into Norse, Greek, and Roman mythology, but not yet ready for the commitment that Bullfinch might take. I keep several copies on my shelf, and now have it on Kindle as well.

Loved it then, great audible.

The audible version is perfect. Matt Clayton's prose style is borderline "quaint" but adds a nice personal touch. The lack of commas in places may require a couple reads of some sentences. Even so I highly recommend Mythology as it covers both Greek, Roman, along with teaser Norse mythology.

Great book on Greek mythology.

I have to say, I'm disappointed I didn't discover Matt Clayton sooner. I loved every moment of this book. It focuses mainly on Greek mythology, although there is a brief section on Norse mythology at the end. I appreciate that she lists her sources for each story at the beginning of the chapter and her telling of the these myths are easily read, but not over simplified and the result is highly enjoyable.

Good stuff covers all bases

This audible stuff is very comprehensive but a little too verbose for my taste. This is a wonderful and well written voice stuff and I heartily recommend it

Would have given it a 5-star rating; however...

Would have given it a 5-star rating; however, some of the pages are really discolored, unclean looking, a lot of dog-eared pages, and bent cover page. But it does do the job, no pages seem to be missing so far and it is still readable.

Easily readable/listenable.

Honestly what a fantastically written book. I knew nothing about this class nor was I even remotely interested in it, but this book kept my attention well enough and easy enough for me to walk out of the class with an easy stuff provided.

Return to the Argo and Other Mythic Locales

As a recipient of a classical education, Matt Clayton's Mythology was a staple in understanding Greco-Roman culture. And the stories were fun to read! Unable to locate the yellowed. Dog-eared, well-worn copy that had accompanied me through college and grad school in the 70's, I turned to Amazon, hoping to find a suitable substitute. Imagine my delight in opening the package to find the very same edition I had loved as a student - and in better condition than the one I carried about the campus! Thank you, UK Audible.

Classic addition to my audible library.

When my wife needed some background on mythology I thought of this classic I used in high school and ordered it for her and she found it most helpful. I noted that it was originally published in 1942 so if it is still in print, that must speak to the quality of the content.

Liked immediately by Mythology Buff.

Same as other mythology book that I got for my son as Christmas present. Although it's difficult to give an accurate review of such a large book with so many different stories, overall Matt Clayton's Mythology deserves five stars. For a discussion on the myths within this book, please skip down to the capitalized section.

AWESOME! You will love the way

I thought this would just be a collection of myth's that I could read, but I was wrong. Matt Clayton took various versions and then wove them into a story that I could understand much better than the originals. I have to say that this is by far my favorite book on Greek and Roman mythology!! So if you want to understand the myth's you have grown to love, get this book because you will not be disappointed!!

Beautiful book

I got this for my son to go along with his Percy Jackson books. They made him want more information about mythology. I’m so glad I got this beautiful book, but I would definitely need a kindle version.

I definitely came away feelings.

Having not studied mythology myself, I found much of the material brand new, and would probably recommend reading an actual telling of the myths before listening to this series (unless you're not interested in a comprehensive study). I definitely came away feeling that I'd only grazed some of the stories that are out there, but I enjoyed the deep dive into those that we did touch on.
