Sounds exciting, only this massive farmhouse likes to eat men. If I were a regular human, I would have run out screaming like a banshee. As a witch - I do absolutely nothing. Hey, maybe they deserved it? I'm back in Hollow Cove, the flamboyant paranormal community, where nymphs, werewolves, trolls, shifters, witches, and other paranormals live comfortable lives away from prying human eyes.

Story
Blessed (or cursed, depending on who you ask) with human intelligence, Sir Edgar Allan Kipling, magical talking cat extraordinaire, spends most of his time keeping his human out of trouble. Of course, having a wizard for a human means that trouble is never far away. When Sir Kipling's human goes away for the weekend and leaves him to guard her magical library, things start out quiet. But he soon discovers witches smelling suspiciously of demon magic snooping about, and quiet goes out the window as chaos looms on the horizon.

Disappointed, but not sure if it is the book or the Voice that Disappointed me more!?!
I listened to thIs first book on Audible. I was a bit disappointed. The Voice Reader sounds like a teenager struggling to read. It seemed to move slow. I can’t tell if that is just the way the Reader was reading or if the story line was just simply slow to draw me in. I nearly stopped listening several times before reaching the end, too bored/disappointed to continue. The advertising claims it to be an adult version of Harry Potter, but I find it more juvenile than Harry Potter.
Finally, as I reached the end chapters the book reached a momentum that I would start comparing it to Harry Potter. And the way the book ends does make you want to progress to the next book, almost like a “too be continued” episode on TV. I have not begun the next book, because I am afraid of becoming bored again. I am also not sure I can handle more of the Voice Reader’s slow & cautious tone. I prefer Audio Book Readers to be expressive like they find the book intriguing from the 1st word read. It would be my recommendation to read this series yourself.... If I find spare time perhaps I will also read the next books for myself. Maybe then I can accurately determine if it is the Voice Reader or the Books themselves that are slow moving!!!!

Loved it
I really enjoyed this book and I rather liked the way the narrator took her time. It added to the character, one who is always thinking and figuring things out. I thought it was interesting, intelligently written, dark, sad and well...I bought books two and three before I even finished it!

Not within a million miles of Harry Potter
I watch videos in my mind as audible narrators read books to me. This author paints ridiculous, impossible and just plain wrong word pictures. So, as I "watch" the story with my mind I come to screeching halts, and find it necessary to back the story to see if she really did just say that the forest was "soaring" as she ran through it (really? flying trees and bushes?) and her knickers were "blaring", (WTH did she eat?!) and wooden floors were "Tarnished" which could only happen if the floors were silver-plated. I cannot enjoy a story so full of mental pictures that give me brain-aches. And the 12-year-old narrator reading in nearly a monotone just made my misery complete. I will be returning this book and will never read anything else written by this lady of screwy word pictures.

At the outset, we know that there is more going on than a teenage girl starting at school for witches, and through her, we discover a bit of this magical world, and its layers of personal and political intrigue. I just loved this book. So much. I can see why it won a Young Adults Award. This was the deciding factor that tempted me to purchase, plus I love all thing witchy. I was captivated from the start and totally enjoyed it all the way through. I really hope all her future books are as good because I think I have found in her, a new author to follow. I thoroughly recommend this to fans of magic, witches and schools for young witches.

There is definitely a villain
There is a good person the lead character and a villain. The rest of the characters support these two. The characters are all well developed. Reminds a bit of Harry Potter books. Sad ending and can’t wait to read the next book. A long book worth the money for an audio.
