It is London 1915 and Great Britain is at war with Germany. Stylish lady detective Miss Isabel Hewitt's manservant Clarke is away in Flanders serving in the Royal Medical Corps. Isabel is anxious for his safety.

On the Home Front she has become involved with the Women's Emergency Corps. Through this work she has met a tall, well-built young woman named Hattie Peach. Hattie is now her maid and driver. Isabel is coping with her new life and then someone murders two girls from the WEC.

Lots of action packed into 2 hours!

There is a lot of action packed into Miss Hewitt Investigates the Return of the Ripper by Linda Stephenson. The title character is lady detective Miss Isabel Hewitt who appears to be independently wealthy in 1915 London despite her unmarried status. She is asked to investigate two murders of fellow members of the Women's Emergency Corps. Isabel butts head with the local investigating officer, who arrests the wrong person, and she methodically tracts down the killer in short order.

Although Return of the Ripper appears to be the first in the Miss Hewitt Investigates series, I felt like I came into the middle of the series. How are her investigation skills established enough to be hired to find a killer? Also, Miss Hewitts’s manservant Clarke returns from the war after being injured and their relationship appears to be a close one (he moves into her house). How did he become such a trusted employee? Finally, Clarke’s estranged wife visits Isabel to let him know he is back from the war. Who is she and why does this relationship seemed strained to say the least?

I listened to the Audible version of this story narrated by Julia Eve, which runs 2 1/4 hours long. Her narration was very enjoyable and she really bought the characters to life, using a variety of distinct voices. Despite the unanswered questions I have about the back story, I’m looking forward to listening to other books in the Miss Hewitt Investigates series.

Enjoyable Short Mystery

This is a charming short mystery. There is no shortage of suspects even though the plot moves at a quick pace. The characters are likable, some smart and some quirky. There are several twists and turns throughout the mystery. This is an interesting and creative storyline.

The narrator Julia Eve does a wonderful job bringing the characters to life. She has wonderful diction and timing. This is an enjoyable listening experience that reminds me of old-time radio stories.

I received a copy of this book at my request, and I have voluntarily left this review. All thoughts and opinions are my own and in no way have been influenced.

Enjoyable

A charming Victorian ripper tale with a very likeable heroine in Miss Hewitt. You like her support system and you wonder how on earth her good friend Clark ever managed to get married to a greedy old harpy like his wife. The story flowed nicely and you definitely wanted Miss Hewitt to succeed in her quest and if she was lucky enough, get the happily ever after, she might not have been looking for in the first place. It had interesting characters as well as quirky ones and they were all good and the action wasn't bad either, So when you get a chance pick up a copy and enjoy.

A fun short mystery

In Miss Hewitt Investigates the Return of the Ripper by Linda Stephenson, upper class member Isabelle Hewitt runs a detective agency in 1915 London in the midst of World War I. With her manservant Clarke, the man she loves, in the Medical Corp, Isabelle works to keep busy to distract herself. One day Mrs. Styles, head of the Women's Emergency Corp, comes to Isabelle to ask her to investigate something for her. Two nights before, her Corp member Mary Haynes was murdered in a brutal manner, and a night later, member Enid Wells suffered a similar fate. Mrs. Styles suspects that Jack the Ripper has come out of retirement and wants Isabelle to locate the murderer. With the help of her employees, Isabelle interviews witnesses and searches for the truth.

Miss Hewitt Investigates the Return of the Ripper is a short audiobook (2 hours, 19 minutes), but it packs plenty of plot and character development into the short piece. The storyline has real interest to it, with a creative plot and an interesting conclusion. I enjoyed the characters of Isabelle and her new assistant, Hattie Peach. But I would have liked more about the historical era, which doesn't have a lot of depictions.

Julia Eve performs the audio edition of this book, taking us in time travel back to 1915 England. With careful diction, Eve modulates between the accents of the different classes and uses clearly defined voices for each of the characters. Her performance lives up to the excitement of the book, and I look forward to hearing her narrate the other two books in this trilogy.

I appreciated listening to Miss Hewitt Investigates the Return of the Ripper. It was a fairly light, enjoyable listen with creative elements to it. If it had just had more historical detail, I would have especially liked it, but even without that, I give the book five stars.

Ripping Yarn

Linda Stephenson has created a wonderful world, giving us a peek into WWI Britain. The characters (including a flatulent pup!) are well formed and each have their own voice, and the book even touches on themes not often encountered in stories set in this time period. Wonderfully narrated by Julia Eve, Miss Hewitt's world is one to which I cannot wait to return.

A good introduction to the series.

I really liked this short story as an introduction to the test of the series. There was plenty of drama and suspense along with a little bit if humour. A good listen.
