Ep. 81 – How the American Legion Transformed a Veteran’s LifeJeremy EHeart’s journey is one of service, sacrifice, and resilience. A proud Kansan, Jeremy enlisted in the United States Marine Corps shortly after the 9/11 attacks, answering the call to serve his country. In 2004, a life-changing combat injury left him with severe burns and launched a long and difficult recovery. With the unwavering support of his military family and loved ones, Jeremy persevered—ultimately finding new purpose through the American Legion, a pivotal force in veteran support and reintegration.A New Mission After Military ServiceReturning home to Hutchinson, Kansas, Jeremy was initially hesitant to join a veterans service organization. But at the urging of his wife, Kristy, he attended a local American Legion post meeting—and instantly felt a sense of belonging. That moment marked the beginning of his deep involvement in the Legion and renewed commitment to giving back to the military and veteran community. As veterans transition back to civilian life, organizations like the American Legion provide community and purpose, while veteran-focused banks like Armed Forces Bank offer tools to support financial wellness—such as military checking accounts, savings accounts, and personalized guidance for budgeting after service. The American Legion: Championing Veterans and Military FamiliesAs the largest Veteran Service Organization (VSO) in the country, the American Legion boasts approximately 1.6 million members dedicated to supporting those who have served. Their mission spans veteran advocacy, suicide prevention, support for military families, and honoring fallen heroes.Jeremy highlights the Legion’s “Be the One” initiative, a powerful movement aimed at preventing veteran suicide by encouraging open conversations and community support. The Legion also provides access to accredited service officers, who help veterans navigate VA benefits and services—completely free of charge.Whether navigating VA benefits or reestablishing financial independence, many veterans benefit from VA home loans—a powerful way to achieve homeownership with zero down payment options and competitive rates. Banks like Armed Forces Bank, an approved VA lender, work closely with service members and veterans to streamline this process.Veteran Advocacy and Continued ServiceToday, Jeremy continues to serve in a leadership role within the American Legion, using his voice to advocate for critical issues affecting the military and veteran population. He and fellow Legionnaires travel annually to Capitol Hill to push for policy changes around veteran homelessness, mental health resources, and improved benefits.Through his work, Jeremy has found renewed comradery, purpose, and healing—echoing the experiences of countless other veterans who have transitioned from active duty to civilian life with the support of organizations like the Legion.Just as the American Legion advocates for better resources and services, veterans also need financial institutions that understand the military lifestyle. Much like the assistance provided by trusted veteran service organizations, Armed Forces Bank has Access Loans that are designed with veterans in mind, to help cover unexpected expenses - whether it’s for relocation, vehicle repairs, or transitioning needs. How to Get Involved with American LegionFor active-duty service members, veterans, and military spouses considering involvement, Jeremy recommends visiting a local American Legion post to explore programs aligned with personal interests—from youth mentorship and Legion Baseball to mental health initiatives. Civilians are also encouraged to support the mission through volunteer work and donations—because patriotism extends beyond military service. With more than 12,000 American Legion posts nationwide, there are countless ways to connect with the military support network and make a difference.Celebrating 100 Years of American Legion BaseballIn a milestone year, American Legion Baseball marks its 100th anniversary. • How a Teen's Piggy Bank Changed Soldier Communication Forever
    May 28 2025
Welcome to the "Militarily Speaking" podcast with Tom McLean and Jodi Vickery. In this episode of “Militarily Speaking,” Tom and Jodi sit down with Rob Bergquist, co-founder and Executive Director of Cell Phones for Soldiers. Rob shares the inspiring journey of how he and his sister Brittany started the nonprofit organization at the ages of 12 and 13 to help military members stay connected with their families. Find out how they’re continuing to innovate and serve the military community through programs like Minutes that Matter, Helping Heroes Home, and future plans, including the launch of their Soldiers Mobile Program.“Militarily Speaking” is a podcast produced by Armed Forces Bank that is dedicated to the military lifestyle and all the things that makes the military community who they are. Ep. 80 – How a Teen's Piggy Bank Changed Soldier Communication ForeverIn today's interconnected world, access to communication is a fundamental necessity. Yet, for many of our service members and veterans, this basic need can sometimes be out of reach. This episode brings us an inspiring story of how two young siblings turned a moment of empathy into a transformative movement with their nonprofit organization, Cell Phones for Soldiers. The Mission to Help Soldiers Call Home In 2004, Rob Bergquist and his sister Brittany were just 12 and 13 years old when they felt moved by the plight of a soldier burdened with an $8,000 phone bill upon returning from Iraq. Motivated by a personal connection—two cousins actively serving overseas—the siblings decided to act. What began as a small fundraiser with a modest $21 collected from their classmates blossomed into a nationwide initiative. Encouraged by supportive parents and a local bank that believed in their mission, Rob and Brittany quickly garnered $8,000 to pay off the soldier's debt. Their swift success catapulted them into the national spotlight, forming the foundation of Cell Phones for Soldiers. Expanding to Help More Service Members Initially focused on providing calling cards to service members, Cell Phones for Soldiers has since grown exponentially. Through innovative methods like recycling used cell phones and electronics, the organization has funded over 450 million minutes of free talk time for deployed troops. As technology evolved, so did the nonprofit. With increased connectivity becoming available globally, the demand for calling cards diminished, prompting the Bergquists to adapt their services. In 2012, they expanded their mission by establishing the Helping Heroes Home program, offering emergency assistance grants to veterans in need. More recently, the launch of Cell Phones for Soldiers Mobile furthers their reach, providing free smartphones and a year of service to veterans. This initiative aims to connect 30,000 veterans over the next three years, helping them access vital resources and maintain ties with loved ones during their transition to civilian life. Partnerships and Future Goals of Cell Phones for Soldiers Rob emphasizes the importance of partnerships in the organization’s success. Collaborations with third parties like logistics specialists that help manage the influx of donated phones, help ensure maximum resource efficiency. Additionally, partnering with local organizations and service officer networks allows Cell Phones for Soldiers to target veterans effectively and connect them with the right resources. Looking to the future, Rob is excited about the potential of a Cell Phones for Soldiers mobile app. This app will enhance the service by providing veterans with access to essential local resources at the touch of a button. Rob envisions a robust community of veterans supporting each other, with phone bills potentially contributing to the sustainability of this growing network. Family-Driven Dedication A testament to its widespread success is the unwavering family involvement from day one. Both Brittany and Rob have been pivotal in navigating the nonprofit’s course, celebrating their achievements and learning from challenges. As Rob reflects on his father's recent passing, he finds deep motivation in honoring his dad through ongoing service, emphasizing that every connected veteran is a tribute to his father's legacy. Get Involved with Cell Phones for Soldiers Cell Phones for Soldiers relies on support from individuals and corporations alike. Whether it’s donating an old phone, becoming a drop-off location, or fostering corporate partnerships for device turnover, every contribution makes a significant impact. As Rob often advises aspiring non-profiters, the key to their enduring success lies in staying focused on the mission while being willing to innovate and adapt. Rob and his family continue to inspire with their commitment to bridging gaps in communication for those who serve. With over two decades of service, Cell Phones for Soldiers stands as a beacon of support for veterans seeking to stay ...

HeroBox was founded with a mission to provide personalized care packages to deployed service members, bridging the gap between home and the frontlines. The initiative began when its founder noticed that a loved one, while deployed, needed a more tailored care package. Today, HeroBox has grown to support nearly a million deployed service members with the help of over 20,000 registered sponsors and countless Hero Day events. Ep. 77 – The Astonishing Legacy of a 9/11 Firefighter and the Tunnel to Towers Foundation The episode kicks off with a discussion about the Tunnel to Towers Foundation's beginnings, closely tied to the events of September 11, 2001. Jack Oehm shares the harrowing yet inspiring story of firefighter Stephen Siller, who on that fateful day ran nearly two miles through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers with 60 pounds of gear on his back. Though Stephen lost his life in his heroic efforts, his legacy lives on through Tunnel to Towers. The Foundation was established by his family to honor not only him but all the victims of 9/11 and the brave souls who came to their aid. Honoring Their Sacrifice Jack paints a vivid picture of the Foundation's evolution from its grassroots beginnings, reflecting on its commitment to supporting communities affected by 9/11 and subsequent tragedies. One significant turning point was the decision to build the first "smart home" for quadruple amputee and fellow Staten Islander, Brendan Marrocco. This initiative was the start of a larger program that has since provided more than 200 smart homes to severely injured veterans. Building Smart Homes and More The creation of smart homes is just one facet of the Foundation's impactful work. In 2023 alone, the Foundation plans to build 60 more smart homes, demonstrating a commitment to expanding their support. Paying Off Mortgages for Fallen Heroes Jack also discusses other pivotal programs such as their efforts to pay off mortgages for families of fallen first responders and Gold Star families. This support extends a lifeline to those who have lost loved ones in the line of duty, ensuring they have one less burden to bear during their time of grief. Helping Tunnel to Towers Foundation Throughout the podcast, the hosts and Jack emphasize how listeners can contribute, whether through participating in various fundraising events like golf outings and 5K runs or by donating directly to the Foundation. One of the most accessible ways to support is their $11 a month donation initiative, which significantly aids in continuing the Foundation's vital work. Looking Forward: A Commitment to Never Forget As the conversation winds down, Jack highlights the Foundation's latest ambitious endeavor: a program aimed at eradicating homelessness among veterans.
