Publisher's summary

Men Who Hate Women examines the rise of secretive extremist communities who despise women and traces the roots of misogyny across a complex spider web of groups. It includes eye-opening interviews with former members of these communities, the academics studying this movement, and the men fighting back.

Women's rights activist Laura Bates wrote this book as someone who has been the target of many hate-fueled misogynistic attacks online. At first, the vitriol seemed to be the work of a small handful of individual men...but over time, the volume and consistency of the attacks hinted at something bigger and more ominous. As Bates went undercover into the corners of the internet, she found an unseen, organized movement of thousands of anonymous men wishing violence (and worse) upon women.

In the book, Bates explores:

  • Extreme communities like incels, pick-up artists, MGTOW, Men's Rights Activists and more
  • The hateful, toxic rhetoric used by these groups
  • How this movement connects to other extremist movements like white supremacy
  • Where this ideology shows up in our everyday lives in mainstream media, our playgrounds, and our government

Depicts the way misogyny is a harmful to everyone

This is a book that many may not be able to stomach, because truth can be more horrific than fiction. It is an excellent depiction of how misogyny is harmful and dangerous not only to women but men too.

Horrifying to read… but necessary

I don’t do social media because of all the hate and lies vomited on society over the last several years (ie Covid, antivax, flat earth etc), so I had no idea how much violent sexism had permeated it. This was eye opening and scary… so much so that I had to read it in chunks when I usually read nearly straight through. Show this to fathers, brothers, sons and daughters. Actually, show EVERYONE.

Bracing, necessary, troubling - men need to hear this

I thought I knew a lot of this stuff. I’ve read about incels and mass shootings and know a fair amount about the men’s rights movement and alt right bad actors inciting vulnerable, fragile men to commit violence. But there was a lot I didn’t know and it was really troubling. There are quite a few things that will stick with me to the extent that I’m reluctant to recommend this book to other women. I’m more afraid of men and look at them differently now than I did before I listened to this book and I’m sad about that. But maybe I need my eyes opened. Maybe we all do? One thing I know for sure — good men definitely do. I don’t think (and I’m fact, kinda hope not) that most men really know how bad misogyny has become and I think it’s their responsibility to have our (women’s) backs but also a responsibility to our/their sons, each other and themselves. I wish more men - of all races - would read this book.

The only complaint I have is about the voice of the narrator. I legit thought it was AI, that’s how robotic it sounds. Wish it’d been read by the writer or at least someone else who felt a connection to the material.

Important information

Bates does not sugar coat the situation. It’s important for us to understand how these groups are increasing in size and the impact their hatred of women has on society.

Eye Opening!

I learned a lot and now, I’m more afraid than I was about the fate of women and men in this society. But I am thankful to have the information needed to make change.

Vitally Important

This was a hard book to listen to only for its brutal honesty and revealing nature of the vial things being bounced around on line and manifesting in our day-to-day lives. A must-read for awareness and shifting the conversation forward.

Disturbing, informative, well researched, and well written, and I was simply unable to put it down.

Exemplary research and exposition

Laura Bates has done excellent work combining her direct, wide-ranging observations with academic research, public records, and investigative journalism. She leaves no doubt as to the facts surrounding the emergence, growth, and present and future dangers of organized misogynistic movements in America and abroad.
