Between a bad breakup and a rocky relationship with her overbearing father, 23-year-old Vanessa Clark has a history of being disappointed by the men in her life. So when her long-lost grandfather reenters the scene and persuades her to tour northern Portugal on one of his river cruise ships, Vanessa boards the vessel looking for answers about her estranged family, not looking for love.

Captain Matias Romano has enough to worry about without having to babysit his boss’s spoiled American granddaughter, no matter how good-looking and wealthy she is. First the issue with the refrigerators, and now the ship's computers are malfunctioning - he’ll be relieved when this trip is over and he can get back to business as usual.

But as Matias plays tour guide on Vanessa’s excursions and they work together to investigate a series of suspicious accidents aboard, they both realize there’s more to the other than first impressions.

Can Vanessa work through her complicated past to make room for Matias in her future, or will they pass like ships in the night?

Enjoyable Sweet clean romance

This author did a great job. It’s complete, well written, and no cliff hangers. The narrator did well with the accents and character voices. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a simple clean sweet romance with a HEA.

Wonderful, Unexpected, Illogical Logic

Wonderful, Unexpected, Illogical Logic is how I would describe this story. From the father and grandfather, the mysteries surrounding the ship, to the unexplained chemistry; this story was a charming excursion from real-life.

2nd first impressions

Vanessa and Matias meet and sparks fly but will they actually take a chance on love? The title is so appropriate for their relationship. Not only was this a romance but a mystery and I really enjoyed how they worked together to figure things out.

The Love Boat!!

I am loving this series by Lucinda Whitney. This second installment in the Romano Family has us meeting Vanessa Clark. She has had some bad luck with relationships, has an overbearing father and just found out that she has a grandfather. This newly found family member puts her on his cruise ship to Portugal, the country her mother is from. Matias Romano is the captain of this cruise ship, and has to look out for Vanessa. While first impressions are not always the best, this couple finds their slow burning attraction. But with so much baggage to work through, will they find a way to make it work? And now there are unexplained accidents on the ship! Is it safe? Will they make it back to land and find the culprit? A little suspense, a great vacation imagery of Portugal, some crazy family and an undeniable chemistry, this love boat will take you on the cruise of your life. It's written so you feel like you are there.

Mary Jane Conlon brings this second installment to us with her wonderful voice. I am loving her narrations, spot on accents and incredible voices. Each one easy to distinguish, it is a pleasure to hear her. I will be watching for more of her releases.

Finding love on a river cruise

This was the first novel I read by Lucinda Whitney a couple of years ago and I really liked it. Listening to the audiobook reminded me of things I'd forgotten about Vanessa and Matias' story which takes place on a river cruise in Portugal. Matias Romano is the ship's captain and Vanessa Clark is an American from Kansas who found out on her 21st birthday that she has a wealthy Portuguese grandfather. Vanessa is overwhelmed with the news and isn't really happy that her grandfather has sent her on this cruise. Matias doesn't know she just found out about her grandfather, he misunderstands her aloofness and thinks she's a spoiled heiress.

Because Vanessa's grandfather asks Matias to be her personal "guard" when they visit the ports on the cruise they develop a friendship. Vanessa becomes friends with several older couples on the ship, and her attitude towards her new Portuguese family changes by the end of the cruise.

Besides the story of Vanessa and Matias, there's also a secondary story about strange accidents happening on the ship. Things that never happened on the cruises before.

I enjoyed how Vanessa and Matias' love story developed, and the description of the various places in Portugal. The mystery of incidents and accidents on board the ship is solved by the end of the book.

The narrator does an excellent job pronouncing the Portuguese names and places. She's the same narrator for Hold Me at Twilight (Romano Family #1).

Fun international contemporary

Meet Me at Sunrise by Lucinda Whitney
Narrated by Mary Jane Conion
June 27, 2019
5 stars
This was a fun international contemporary romance! Mostly onboard a river cruise in Portugal, they visit castles and other beautiful scenes near Porto. The fun begins when this small town Kansas girl meets the well loved Captain Romano!
I loved the narration! Hearing the Captain and the crew speak their English with accents as well as the international guests speak with their various accents, was delightful and greatly admired! I haven’t read or listened to book one, so look for a future review of Hold Me at Twilight!

A very romantic clean book

Rating 4.5 stars

• Vanessa and Matias were characters that were human and had faults. However, they were very likeable and their characterization was well done. Matias was my favorite character.
• The descriptions of locations and emotions were thorough, easy to visualize and to feel. I felt a part of the scenes.
• The author's descriptions of the river cruise in northern Portugal was so real, I wanted to sign up for the next cruise.
• The pacing of the story was neither too slow nor too fast.
• The narrator did an excellent job in differentiating the various characters' voices. She gave Matias a consistent, believable accent. The narrator had a pleasant voice to listen to.
