Between a bad breakup and a rocky relationship with her overbearing father, 23-year-old Vanessa Clark has a history of being disappointed by the men in her life. So when her long-lost grandfather reenters the scene and persuades her to tour northern Portugal on one of his river cruise ships, Vanessa boards the vessel looking for answers about her estranged family, not looking for love.

Captain Matias Romano has enough to worry about without having to babysit his boss’s spoiled American granddaughter, no matter how good-looking and wealthy she is. First the issue with the refrigerators, and now the ship's computers are malfunctioning - he’ll be relieved when this trip is over and he can get back to business as usual.

But as Matias plays tour guide on Vanessa’s excursions and they work together to investigate a series of suspicious accidents aboard, they both realize there’s more to the other than first impressions.

Can Vanessa work through her complicated past to make room for Matias in her future, or will they pass like ships in the night?

Romance on the river

I would love to take a river cruise. This one in Portugal sounds perfect. Don't think I will be falling in love with the captain, but still a pleasant trip. Sweet romance with family issues.

Unexpected heiress and cute riverboat captain

I haven’t read the first book in this series but this was a stand along and I didn’t feel I missed anything. This is a clean sweet read that didn’t disappoint. Vanessa just finds out she has grandparents that are alive and a whole side of the family she has never met. She is from Kansas and her extended family are from Portugal. She is convinced by her grandfather to come and meet them. While visiting he sets her up on a river boat cruise.
Captain Matias is asked to keep on eye on Vanessa. Since Vanessa’s grandfather owns the river boat he feels obligated to comply. He thinks she is a spoiled rich girl.
The two start to get to know each other and sparks fly. There is also a bit of a mystery going on as strange events are occurring on the ship.
This is an enjoyable listen / read.

Clean, fun romance

I don’t usually like contemporary but this was well done. It definitely made me want to go on a cruise! The narrator was amazing at pronouncing the cities and names.

A very romantic clean book

Rating 4.5 stars

• Vanessa and Matias were characters that were human and had faults. However, they were very likeable and their characterization was well done. Matias was my favorite character.
• The descriptions of locations and emotions were thorough, easy to visualize and to feel. I felt a part of the scenes.
• The author's descriptions of the river cruise in northern Portugal was so real, I wanted to sign up for the next cruise.
• The pacing of the story was neither too slow nor too fast.
• The narrator did an excellent job in differentiating the various characters' voices. She gave Matias a consistent, believable accent. The narrator had a pleasant voice to listen to.

(4.5 stars) - Intriguing and romantic

The story engaged me immediately and kept me there as the details surrounding Vanessa's presence on the ship were slowly revealed. And Matias was a yummy romantic hero.

There is suspense, but it's fairly low key - which is appreciated by those of us who are already tired & just reading for a romantic getaway not edge of the seat action.

The only thing that keeps it from being a perfect 5 star review is that the pacing feels a bit uneven at times & the sabotage plot line is technically resolved but not connected to the main story (the next book in the series does give some explanation), but these are very minor quibbles.

Overall, this is a well done story that I know I'll be listening to over and over again

*Clean romance level: passionate kisses

The narrator is pleasant to listen to, and does a creditable job with the different characters voices & the accents
