Publisher's Summary

Smart, edgy, hilarious, and unabashedly raunchy New York Times best-selling author Samantha Irby explodes in her uproarious first collection of essays.

Irby laughs her way through tragicomic mishaps, neuroses, and taboos as she struggles through adulthood: chin hairs, depression, bad sex, failed relationships, masturbation, taco feasts, inflammatory bowel disease, and more. Updated with her favorite Instagramable, couch-friendly recipes, this much-beloved romp is treat for anyone in dire need of Irby's infamous, scathing wit, and poignant candor.

"Amazingly crass, defiant, witty, terrifying, and wondrous...[Irby] cuts the bawdy, wickedly funny pieces with some truly poignant palate cleansers...Irby’s voice is raw, gripping, and...[d]elicious." (Booklist)

Featured Article: Must-Hear Contemporary Black Women Authors

It’s a fact that a high percentage of the best books that have come out in this century have been written by Black women authors. (Truth be told, there are so many excellent works that this list could simply centered on the best contemporary authors and still be accurate.) Nevertheless, Black women’s stories deserve to be heard, and when the stories are this compelling, this engaging, and this beautifully written, they’re impossible to ignore.

Lazy attempt at another book

This is the third Samantha Iry book I have purchased and couldn't be more.disappointed. It feels like it was written over a weekend with a Monday due date.

Same As Her Other Book

This is basically the exact same book as her other book called something like We Are Never Meeting In Real Life. I am super annoyed to have bought this. Shallow observations. Not funny.

Hilariously honest

If you could sum up Meaty in three words, what would they be?

Hilarious, vulnerable, refelctive

What did you like best about this story?

Samantha Irby is brazenly unafraid to "go there". She shares harrowing moments of her life with a critical rawness but somehow still manages to make everything laugh-out-loud funny.

What about Samantha Irby’s performance did you like?

This is my second Samantha Irby audio and no one other then Sam should ever be allowed to perform her books.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I definitely made a few wrong turns while listening to this audiobook in my car because I was too distracted from laughing.

Sad and gross stories plus lazy narration

I was really disappointed with this one, I actually ended up returning it I could not get through! The narration by the author sounds ... lazy? Annoyed? Not good it was groggily and slow. The stories were ok but kinda sad or gross very basic observations done by most comedic or self deprecating writers
It lacked a lot

Samantha Irby is a gift

Anything she writes is gold, but her narration takes it to another level. You'll listen to this book (and anything else she decides to recite) no less than five times.

Boring lists, shallow observations, etc.

I tried to finish this but it was just too boring. This is the "book" equivalent of scrolling through random Facebook posts all night because you're too lazy to get up. It's literally just lists, basic recipes, the outline of a boring and non-existent show, and non-funny takes on everyday things. Mad I wasted a credit on this.

This book was more than just comedy

Samantha Irvy is laugh-our-loud funny. In fact, she is “still laughing two hours later” funny. In addition to the funny there is insight to childhood disparities and survived struggles with no melodrama about what she has experienced

My favorite memoir of the year

I have a thing for memoirs, especially ones by comedians or bloggers. This is one of my all time favorites. I have read Samantha’s work since her early blog days and this collection of essays exemplifies her talent. I cried with laughter and then cried actual tears in the same chapter. Sam holds nothing back and hearing her narration is the best way to experience her work.

She made me laugh hard and want to give her a long hug. I have six people I want to send this book to today. Samantha Irby is my new hero.
