Publisher's Summary

From the comedic mind of New York Times best-seller Gail Carriger comes the much requested prequel short story to Soulless. Narrated by Emma Newman.

Alexia Tarabotti attends what appears to be a very dull London party, until the new werewolf Alpha turns up, is unconscionably rude to her, and sits on a hedgehog.

Don't miss this charming novelette featuring the first encounter between the Parasolverse's most popular power couple, preternatural Alexia and supernatural Lord Conall Maccon.

Look out for cheeky appearances from much beloved characters, not to mention the strategic application of a certain wicker chicken.

Alexia has been described as Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Jane Austen!

A Note on Chronology

Set in the spring of 1872, this story occurs just prior to events chronicled in The Parasol Protectorate series (featuring Alexia and Conall) and after those in Defy or Defend

This is a quick listen at 9,000 words (about 15 printed pages) available in print only as part of the Fan Service omnibus. It is best heard if you are already familiar with Gail Carriger's gaslight universe and comedy of manners style, as it was written specifically with her fans in mind.

Funny Origin Story - Fan service for Parasoleverse

Wonderfully narrated and funny origin story for Alexia Tarabotti. I have listened to this several times with great amusement. The narration is read with enthusiasm, at a pace that is easy to understand and with good voices for each character. This short story really requires reading all of the Parasol Protectorate and Finishing School Series to understand all of the references. This was a treat for Ms Gail to release and have it recorded for fans. I love the Parasolverse audiobooks, they are great for commute traffic because they are entertaining and make me laugh even in the worst of traffic. I often buy both the print and audiobook versions because I know I will enjoy them.

Delightful!

The Parasol Protectorate is one of my all-time favorite novel series. I was so glad to see a prequel story that allowed me to revisit such an excellent setting. Alexia and Lord Maccon are wonderfully portrayed here, staying true to the characters that I first met in Soulless. The narrator does a wonderful job, as well. Her performance is perfect (pacing, voices, inflections) to the piece.

loved it

The narrator was delightful and matched the voice I read Gail's books with in my head. I have always wondered about the hedgehog incident and was not disappointed. Lovely piece of work on all counts. If you are new to Gail Carriger 's works, I strongly suggest you check out Soulless first.

At last!

Finally, the "Hedgehog Incident"! Anyone who has enjoyed the journey of Alexia and Connal will love this insight into their meeting. I thoroughly loved it. I was also extremely pleased to see who was responsible for the meeting! Well done!

Emma Newman narrates this perfectly.

So excited to finally know the whole story.

I have read the Parasol Protectorate twice without knowing the full details of the “hedgehog incident.” I’m so glad I now have all of the details. I had no idea that Sophronia and Soap were involved. I loved reading about them again. I have grown very fond of both of them.

This is a great read and I recommend it highly!

Another glimpse of Soap & Sophronia

It was so nice to see the wonderful Soap & Sophronia again - You must read the Finishing School series before this one. The meeting of the main couple was nice too. Its a cute, fill in the gap story for those who love this world she has created.

cute, with inconsistencies

2.5 Exactly as the title says, this is the 'meet cute' story of Alexia Tarabotti and Lord Maccon, and of course the previously referenced hedgehog. It's cute and funny, but a little more humor would have been nice. Also, I wish it had been longer. The narration was okay. <SPOILER> Oddly, in the author's note, the author thanks her beta readers for helping with continuity. Having just re-read 'Soulless', it is obvious that there are continuity issues. First off, in 'Soulless' Alexia has never seen a naked man, and now in this prequel she gets an eye full of Lord Maccon, and it is even repeated that her father's library didn't tell everything. Sloppy. Also, it is earlier stated that Alexia can neutralize supernaturals through clothing. Then in MC there is a whole scene between Alexia and her mother because she is not wearing her gloves and might inadvertently touch someone; the concern being that werewolves are expected at the party. Alexia's mother is not aware of her abilities in later novels. These issues aren't ruinous, but they are distracting. This was underwhelming.

Great Story

It's great to finally know what the story is behind the 'Hedgehog Incident' that is mentioned regularly in the parasol protectorate. Also, good to hear some more of what Sophronea and soap get up to.

Great book, bland narration

Loved the story, and how it inter-links with the rest of the Parasol Protectorate, and Custard Protocol series. Wasn't a fan of the narration though.

Excellent fun

An excellent book. It was so much fun to finally find out what happened when Alexia and Conall first met - the Hedgehog Incident. As the author warns us, you definitely won’t get as much out of this if you’ve not read at least Soulless, but if (like me) you’ve read all the author’s books, there are so many wonderful references and little nuggets about well loved characters. The narration was excellent, and the result thoroughly enjoyable. Definitely one I’ll be listening to over and over!

The courting potential of hedgehogs

I have just finished listening to Meat Cute for the second time. After my first listen I bought and downloaded the four finishing school books to refresh my memory. My memory of the last book was especially thin because I was being distracted by fighting off being made redundant at the time (I won). I very much enjoyed listening to the books and reacquainting my self with all the characters again and in more depth. This has added to my enjoyment in relistening to Meat Cute today and catching all the nuances.
Now I’m off to indulge in Souless again. Thank you for going through the hassle of making audio books of these stories.

So many familiar faces!

This was a lovely vignette from the parasolverse, of the famous hedgehog incident, where Alexia meets Conall. But my favorite part was seeing familiar characters from other parts of the series - especially Sophronia and Soap. Seeing how their relationship has grown was just lovely.
