Publisher's summary

The 1960s' toughest, brainiest, sexiest, and most compassionate spy, is back in print!

Meet McHugh America's#1 Secret Agent a combination of Mickey Spillaine's Mike Hammer and Ian Flemming's James Bond. Like 007, he has an ultra-sophisticated taste for the finest liquors, food, cars, ladies, and hand-tailored suits. Like Hammer he can pound the toughest thugs teeth in with a single punch, bounce back from the most vicious beatings, carries the biggest hand gun around, and isn't slow to use it, and has the most extraordinary gal pal ever.

In this first book in the series, McHugh takes a leave of absence from his spy work to help out his lover's sister who has found a dead Mafioso in her apartment, her boyfriend missing, and half San Francisco's mobsters after her.

But soon, the twisting trail leads back to his home base, and he finds the case involves not only the Cosa Nostra but has a government aspect as well and is ordered back in service by the General who commands his loyalty. Foreign killers, Mafia Killers, it's a killer of a plot involving millions of dollars in stolen gold, international smugglers, and enough shootouts to send 007 screaming into retirement and frighten Hammer into surrendering his PI license. And then there is Loris. What can we say about Loris? You will have to listen about her for yourself. Move over Velda. Make room Moneypenny. There has never been a woman like Loris before. Or a hero like McHugh. You won't be able to wait for his other adventures. They are espionage classics from the Golden Age of the '60s!

Critic reviews

"Neatly crafted action yarns. Matt Helm fans, in particular, will find them right up their street." (1001 Midnights)

"A jet-setting troubleshooting secret agent -who does it beautifully. There is little wasted time and no slow spots as Mr. Flynn keeps things happening. I devoured them hungrily." (Spy Guys and Gals)

"Beautiful, willing, treacherous women. Ultra-nasty villains. Action fast and furious… Storylines solidly constructed. Elaborate capers. Considerable storytelling skills. Plus plenty of sly humor, breakneck pacing, and lean, evocative writing." (Bill Pronzini, Mystery File)

A Bit Dated

I received this book for free. I am voluntarily posting this review and all opinions expressed herein are my own.

This book was originally published in 1959. The origins of this series supposedly occurred when Flynn's agent sold a 3 book series over a drunken lunch. McHugh is a tough adventurous American spy who owns a bar called The Door with his lover Loris - who sings and bartends. The book is somewhat dated but it does have several pretty good action sequences and a couple of amusing lines you might chuckle over. What detracted most, for me, was the narration. I found it to be almost lethargic and I had to speed it up in order to stay engaged with the story.

OLD TIME FUN READ

This was a great old time spy novel! McHugh is a great character from the classic genre of undercover spies, who goes on leave to help his girlfriend get to the bottom of a mystery. The story line of disappearing gold from a robbery and the aftermath many years later after its accidental recovery.
Story was quick moving and kept my interest throughout. I really enjoyed it.
I received it for an honest review.
Thanks so much!

Mystery

I honestly didn't care for this of murder mystery. It did not keep my interest. The narrator voiced it well. There was too much happening to keep track of the storyline and characters.

A Vintage Spy/Detective Genre Novella

McHugh, with an espionage background, investigates a murder linked to organized crime. Good story for readers that loved Ian Fleming. Narrator uses a Southern accent a which was a B- for me. #1 of a 5 book series, introducing the main characters of the series and their back stories.

Good

This gives the background of who he is, a spy yes, and he likes the finest things in life. His bar is a front for his otherwise activities. Little dated but good, Enjoyed the narration added to who he was and Theo has a good narrator voice. Given audio for my voluntary review and my honest opinion
