Didn’t realize this was a Christian novel

Shoulder out of place? Say a prayer and god will put it in place.
Need CPR? Just cry out “god breath life into him” and BAM you’re alive.
Evil leader of North Korea? He just needs a little Jesus in his life.
One of the worst books I’ve read. If something good happened it had to have been god. It couldn’t just be because that’s how life works. This book became more cringy with every chapter using god and Jesus to explain everything. I listened to it at 1.7 speed just to get through it and in hindsight I wish I had not wasted my time.

Too much Religion

While one expects and even embraces references to Christ, the never I ding interruption of religious mentions interfered with the flow of the story.
It was as though the author wrote a sermon and interwove an interesting story into the sermon instead of the reverse.
Too bad as story could well have supported the authors Christian views. Instead I felt resentful that I paid for what I thought would be an interesting novel and ended up with a Sunday service.

I was looking for a medical thriller and I found this one. I love that it was also heavily focused on spirituality as well. It was a great book to listen to! Onto the next one in the series

Great Story On Multiple Levels

This was an excellent audiobook on a number of levels. The overall story was certainly a thriller, opening with the murder of a Mission Doctor in Guatemala. This was quickly linked to the development of a virus. I just listened to this book last month and thought the author was maybe capitalizing on COVID 19 for his story line until I realized the book was written in 2016, well before the current Pandemic. With this in mind it is an extremely thought provoking story line. The second level concerns the man character's struggles to come to terms with his faith, priorities and work ethic. Finally, there are numerous surgical situations that occur that are both life saving and/or life changing that make you want to keep reading until you find out what happens. While I am not a doctor, I almost feel like I have been through part of a surgical residency after finishing the book! The narration is also excellent which made the story easy to follow both while commuting as well as at home. Overall a most excellent audiobook.

Outstanding medical thriller

Maya never stops! Though having read the hard copy quite some time ago, the Audible version quickly seized my focus. It was excellent in medical information, fast moving and credible in its several “back stories,” and the characters well developed. I loved it!

Fast paced action that’s hard stop

Fast paced action in this book makes it hard to stop listening. Good description and short chapters are fun to read. I liked the characters and dual plot lines that go back and forth, but come together later in the book. Narration is great too.

A scary story makes for a great listen

I really enjoyed this book. It is a little bit scary with everything going on in the world at the moment but what seems like a plot to an interesting mystery, has the potential to become reality, so please any bad guys don't read or listen to this book. I enjoyed it because so much was happening, there is a lot of religious quotes but I think because it takes place mainly in Guatemala that it was appropriate. The contrast to the hospitals in the two countries is really well done and you definitely get a sense of what It is like. It is a medical thriller, so at times you did have your heart in your mouth but it certainly keeps you hooked from the start until the end. Off to start the next book.
Nick a busy trauma surgeon is no stranger to death but when his best friend is brutally murdered in Guatemala he takes it hard. When he flies out for the funeral he learns about the good work his friend had been carrying out and seeing his wife trying to carry on without him, Nick makes a judgement call and decides to stay for a few weeks. Here he is faced with surgeries that are life threatening to the patients but normal everyday operations back home. Unable to cope with the demands for his services especially when a high number of cases are for the same thing Nick enlists help from fellow doctors. Is there a reason so many children have club feet? Why has the birth rate in the area dropped to zero? Nick and his friends start to ask these important questions and in doing so uncover a sinister plot by the North Korea one that might just have lead to his best friends death.
I liked the narrator and thought he used a good a variety of voices to bring the characters to life in this jail biting adventure.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
