Newly promoted Master Gunnery Sergeant Richard Rhodes returns to Vietnam after thirty days leave in Hong Kong and three months training in the states to take over as Operations Chief for the Third Recon Battalion in Dong Ha. Master Guns Rhodes was expecting a tour on the operation staff after an eighteen month extended tour in I-Corps with 3rd Battalion 4th Marines. He had served as Charlie Company Gunny as a Master Sergeant for most of eighteen months, and his nerves were nearly shot. Charlie Company Skipper, now a Major and S3 for 3rd Recon Battalion, had talked Rhodes into waving his return to combat date and another tour as 3rd Recon Operations Chief, a staff billet. A tour as a pogue in a soft staff job was just what Rhodes needed. Or so he thought. There was just one hitch. Rhodes had the training, but no operational Recon experience. Major Slaughter wanted Rhodes to get some operational experience with the recon teams before he started in the Three Shop. But how bad could that be? A few walks in the sun and then an office, hot meals, daily showers, shined boots and clean utes. It didn’t quite work out that way.

i hate virtual voice the quality and the idea great actors are being cut out for cheap computer voices. the story was awesome wish it was potter, pinchot, bray or someone with a war fighters voice.

Master Guns to Captain - I feel it

The AI audio was pretty good, I’ll say as good as a live voice from someone who was not familiar with military lingo. I felt like I was there in some of the battlefield and rear echelon situations that are familiar to me. I have never done some of the more dramatic things that CPT Rhodes did, but I can relate to some. Thanks for telling his story.

Grit and guts got him home

Wow - these were true heroes even hippies had a soft spot in their hearts for! A must read story that takes you from hanging off the side of a mountain, hidden under vines and brush with a venomous snake staring him in the eye as a north Vietnamese solder stands above peering the jungles below, to walking past hippies as he returns home and getting a warm welcome. Great book full of action.

The reader was lousy. It wasn’t enjoyable listening to a voice without any emotion or inflections in it.

heartfelt with good details

a bit monotone. other than that a great tale of courage. It was an egly war driven by dollar signs and corrupt politicians lining thier own pockets.

This is an awesome story well worth the listen. The vertual voice takes getting use to and would have been much better narrated by a human voice with military knowledge.

Good story, lousy AI voice

While the story was engaging I absolutely hated the AI generated voice. Too many mispronounced words. No real difference in tone between the characters. Save your money. Since it was an “included” I didn’t spend any money, but if I had I would definitely want a refund.
