Critic reviews

"Evoke[s] the sense of moral purpose that Luther's life inspired. Lewis' nuanced reading provides whatever shading and perspective the narrative requires...while preserving the respect and admiration for Luther that the author so clearly feels." (AudioFile)

Well written and narrated.

This treatment of Martin Luther's pioneering reformation of the church is valuable because it will appeal just as much to a person who has not otherwise studied the period as it will to the one who has. Both will find stimulating comment located within the boundaries of accurate historical record.

Great look back.

Over 500 years ago this man changed the world and covering his life story is fascinating. If Google only knew the Martin Luther changed the world before Martin Luther King Jr the USA.

You have to feel bad for Catholics

I am not normally inspired to write a review. If you really want to know about Martin Luther read his writings. If you want to understand the Catholic Church, just work your way back from all the sex scandals. The Catholic Church has Augustine and Aquinas. And on the other hand the Protestants have literally every great theologian and philosopher (Kant, Hegel, Kierkegaard, etc) plus we also get Aquinas and Augustine. You’re not smarter than the best philosophers/theologians you’re just probably smarter than dumb Catholics.

Martin Luther

A great piece of religious history. In a time when you were told what your religion is. Everything else you died. loved it.

GOOD BUT MORE DETAIL WOULD HAVE MADE IT BETTER

I enjoyed listening to this book and learnt much from it but I emerged with a desire to have more detail and breadth.

It was worth the listen but its 2 and bit hours was inadequate for the task.
A greater elaboration of how Luther impacted the prevailing culture and why would have made the book much more satisfying for me.

Shocking

While this piece seems to be aimed at young students, and was dry and unscholarly, I was highly offended to learn that Luther had beer at his wedding. Even if it was akin to drinking sweet cider today, if my child was to learn of this they would forever fall under the shadow of the Antichrist.

Find a different book

This book is useless as a work of historical research. The extreme one-sided nature of this piece of propaganda is risible and disgusting. The language level is clearly for that of a child of about six, and the scholarly value is nil. The obvious hatred for the dominant religion of the time is vitriolic. I can't see this as anything more than doggerel meant to make Protestantism seem like it's so glorious in comparison to the medieval Roman Catholic church. I deleted this from my library and never plan on recommending it to anyone who has an ounce of sense. I don't belong to a religion, but listening to this makes me embarrassed for people who think that this sort of lackluster nonsense has any spiritual value.
