Publisher's Summary

In season four of Darren Star’s hit TV Land series Younger, the editors at Empirical Press are shocked and deeply moved when they read Marriage Vacation, an autobiographical novel by the publisher’s estranged wife, Pauline Turner Brooks. Knowing the book will cause a sensation, they decide they must publish it. Now you can hear what the hype is about.

Marriage Vacation is for anyone who has ever fantasized about what it would be like to run away from it all.

By all appearances, Kate Carmichael has the perfect life: two adorable daughters, a prewar townhouse on the Upper East Side, and a husband who runs one of the most successful publishing companies in New York.

But when Kate attends a wedding and reconnects with successful friends from graduate school, she suddenly sees her life in a different light: the career she didn’t pursue, the dreams she’s locked away, the empty veneer of her privilege.

When the wedding weekend ends, instead of heading home to her husband and family, Kate gets on a plane and flies halfway around the world. She claims it’s just going to be for a week - two max - just so she can clear her head and reconnect with her lost dreams. But the adventure doesn't go quite as planned.

This provocative and gripping novel asks: Is a wife and mother allowed to have a midlife crisis? And if she does, can she ever be forgiven?

Critic Reviews

"Marriage Vacation has everything you want an in a novel: fascinating characters, drama, secrets, emotional reckonings, and far-flung adventure. If you love Younger, you’ll love this book. If you’ve never watched an episode of Younger (you should change that), you’ll still love this book." (Darren Star, creator of Sex and the City and Younger)

"This brilliant romp helps us understand why Liza was so excited to discover the manuscript, how any woman could leave the dreamy Charles, and what exactly Pauline - by way of her fictional alter ego, Kate Carmichael - did on that mysterious marriage vacation. Pack this heartfelt, insightful, funny, sexy book when you take a vacation of your own." (Pamela Redmond Satran, author of Younger)

Beautiful Story!

Wow! What a great listen! I can connect with Kate on so many levels (besides being a millionaire and actually going on a one year hiatus). Being a mom and wife can be so exhausting mentally. I’m 37 and already feel the same way sometimes. How I’d love to do what she did, I don’t think I could leave my family for that long though. Maybe for a couple of weeks! I don’t judge her by all means, she needed this and fortunately her husband, even if reluctantly, allowed it and forgave her. That’s LOVE. You truly LOVE someone if let them go even if you’re unsure of the outcome. Lovely Story!

Not true to the hype on Younger!

It was very basic not worthy of the the way they hyped it on the TV show! I was expecting more than a snobby spoiled woman doing a lame version of Eat Pray Love- there was no character development that was good passed the first part with the crazy friend/ college roommate- it seemed lame and highly unbelievable and kind of ridiculous! Sorry I wanted to like it but it fell flat- even when she almost tried to have sex with Dusty!? Stupid!!! Embarrassingly so!

Not like Younger

I wish this novel were more like it’s portrayed on Younger. I only made it through about an hour was and was extremely bored.

Not what I expected

I had to struggled to finish it. the performance with the accent was horrible. The story line was about finding herself again.

Could not get into it

In listening to the first part, I had trouble relating to the character, and did not enjoy the narration. I really like the TV show, but this did not seem to sink

Not what I expected

This was definitely not what I expected however it was enjoyable. The book really has nothing to do with the TV show so if that is what you are expecting then it wont be for you. I did enjoy the story as it told of a women trying to find her way after loosing herself in her family. As a wife and mother of all around me I can relate to the sentiment. I would have liked to read more about the end of her journey and the effects her actions took on her relationship but all in all it was a good listen. I think the narrator did a great job.

Hastily written to capture the Younger TV audience

I struggled with this one. As a boom that came about because of a TV show, my expectations were pretty low.The editing and story felt half-hearted. It felt more like a rejected episode of the TV show "Younger" than the actual story that I thought would play out in this book. Skip it. There are better reads, and absolutely better narrations.

Great book if I wasn’t a diehard fan of the show Younger

The story line and performance was great, but my downfall was expecting it to follow the story line of the show Younger. While there were some great easter eggs in the book, the story was to far off from the show in my experience.

Real life

To all those who like to run away, not all souls are lost, just forgotten till they are able to find themselves again, and Kate did just that....Loved it!
