Story
Roy and Devra have held over 100 marriage seminars and retreats. This audiobook is a tool for the two of you to use together. It will help you find a way to successfully say what you need to say. The struggle in communication in which you find yourself is probably like well-worn ruts in a road. Your efforts to try and drive out of the ruts or keep from falling back into them will be frustrating. Learning new things always creates some initial discomfort but eventually, with practice, we learn to do it without much effort. Learning a new way of talking to each other is difficult as well, but just as rewarding.

Story
Do you want to learn about self-compassion? Do you want to understand how to embrace your soul and love yourself again? Having compassion for oneself is really no different than having compassion for others. First, to have compassion for others, you must notice that they are suffering. Second, compassion involves feeling moved by others’ suffering so that your heart responds to their pain. Self-compassion involves acting the same way towards yourself when you are having a difficult time, fail, or notice something you don’t like about yourself.

Heralded by the New York Times and Time as the couples therapy with the highest rate of success, Emotionally Focused Therapy works because it views the love relationship as an attachment bond. This idea, once controversial, is now supported by science, and has become widely popular among therapists around the world. In Hold Me Tight, Dr. Sue Johnson presents Emotionally Focused Therapy to the general public for the first time. Johnson teaches that the way to save and enrich a relationship is to reestablish safe emotional connection and preserve the attachment bond.

One afternoon - after another failed attempt to get motivated to exercise - I (accidentally) started my first mini habit. I initially committed to do one push-up, and it turned into a full workout. I was shocked. This "stupid idea" wasn't supposed to work. I was shocked again when my success with this strategy continued for months (and to this day). I had to consider that maybe I wasn't the problem in those 10 years of mediocre results. Maybe it was my prior strategies that were ineffective, despite being oft-repeated as "the way to change" in countless books.

So I decided to distill all I have learned from these books into this compact form.

When we talk about the practice of gratitude, we're not talking about saying "thank you" or counting your possessions. Rather, the practice of gratitude is about consciously taking time to be grateful for all the good things in our lives and altering our perspective to focus on that gratitude daily. There is an increasing global interest in gratitude, with the increasing numbers of articles and studies being published, but why all the fuss, and why now?

MINUTES A WEEK TO A MORE FULFILLING RELATIONSHIP
Couples can make love last, says psychotherapist and clinical social worker Marcia Naomi Berger. They just need to learn how. Her prescription is deceptively simple: have an interruption-free 30-minute or shorter, gentle conversation each week, and follow an agenda that includes the kind of appreciation and planning for fun that foster intimacy and pave the way for collaborative conflict resolution. With this book, you'll learn how to communicate and connect with your spouse each week effectively, and for a lifetime, with practical tips to walk you through the four parts of a marriage meeting: expressing appreciation, coordinating chores, planning for good times, and resolving problems.
Inspiring real-life stories demonstrate how transformative these meetings can be. The communication techniques Berger has gleaned from helping hundreds of couples will guide you toward a more vibrant, lasting love.
The downloadable PDF included with this audiobook is a step-by-step guide to hold a successful marriage meeting. Berger and her husband have been married for over 30 years. She gives major credit to their weekly marriage meeting for their lasting happiness.
"The perfect book for the twenty-first-century marriage. A practical, easy way to increase intimacy, romance, and teamwork and resolve conflicts more smoothly." (Susan Page, author of How One of You Can Bring the Two of You Together)
PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying PDF will be available in your Audible Library along with the audio.

So relevant
I love the idea that lies at the heart of this book: that the same conscious and intentional effort that we expect to put into other endeavors,e.g. our careers, can also lead to success in marriage and other relationships. I also am a fan of the idea, also an underlying assumption of this book, that knowledge and skills can be acquired to nurture a relationship: it is unsafe to assume either that one was born with these skills or learned them by osmosis. Like most skills, mastery requires some patience and practice. In particular the communications skills could enhance any important relationship and are clearly and simply explained. The narrator has good flow and leads the listener easily through the chapters.

Recommended listening
I highly recommend this audiobook! It lays out clear, easy to follow guidelines on conducting weekly meetings to improve your relationship with your spouse or partner. The book is fairly short, a little over 5 hours. It shows how a half hour meeting a week of communication and negotiation goes a long way in heading off resentment and grudges. In addition, by showing appreciation for each other and planning time together you can further enhance your relationship.

Perfect gift for newly engaged couples
Clergy doing pre-marriage counseling and weddings would do well to include this book or audio book of Marriage Meetings in their handouts for the about to be married. This is not a psycho-babble self help book. Berger does a service to couples by providing the scaffolding for reflecting on issues that all couples end up facing. The fun and clear ideas provide wonderful opportunities to help couples become partners and stay good friends. Giving this as a gift to newly weds would definitely cut down on the unpleasant surprises marriage can bring. Additionally, Berger publishes free articles regulary free on line that are thoughtful and fun to add to couples’ happiness skillsets. This is also the ideal wedding shower gift. And it would be a great party favor to give out at baby showers and can even be a source of games. Of course this book is also great for anniversaries and ongoing relationships.

Warm, Professional, and Down-to-Earth
I love this audiobook because it tells us exactly how to hold a marriage meeting. My husband and I hold these meetings. We follow clear guidelines and use the four-part agenda. Oh, and the communication techniques that the book describes in detail go a long way to keeping our meetings upbeat and positive. We've been married for over 30 years. Our weekly meetings usually last only 15 to 20 minutes now. That's a small investment in time for keeping us connected for teamwork, intimacy, and romance.
