Publisher's Summary

Marriage is a bond that requires hard work from two people in order to find happiness - find all the tips and tools to a happily-ever-after using the guidance of a trusted relationship expert.

Beloved marriage counselor Pastor Cal Roberson captivates millions of viewers with his eccentric personality and unabashed yet effective marriage advice - and Marriage Ain’t for Punks is no different.

This book is a relationship gamechanger. It’s a straightforward and unapologetic dive into why people fail or struggle at one of the most popular and sought-after unions in society. But this is more than a book about marriage - it’s a book about how to manage life with another person. The principles and methods Roberson provides are not theoretical or hearsay but tested and proven. The book will methodically probe into the hearts of listeners and force them to confront themselves and be accountable for their own emotions and actions.

Even though some marriages look like a hot mess, transparency, honesty, and downright fearlessness are the traits that make a great marriage. A great marriage is about refusing to allow pettiness to destroy the loving connection couples share. These people are not weaklings. They are not quitters. They know that marriage ain’t for punks!

Critic Reviews

“Pastor Cal’s insights translate immediately into ways we can protect and improve even a troubled marriage - if we practice his version of  ‘CPR.’ I can’t imagine anyone, single or married, who would not be inspired, or would not profit, from the wisdom in this book.” (Pepper Schwartz, PhD, New York Times best-selling author of The Normal Bar: The Surprising Secrets of Happy Marriages)

“As a prominent urban radio host, we talk about relationships a lot on our shows and when it’s time to call on an expert, there aren’t too many ‘experts’ I trust who talk the talk, walk the walk, and lead by example - but Pastor Cal is it. Marriage Ain’t for Punks is consistent to what we love and trust about Pastor Cal. It’s realistic, honest (brutally, when needed), and practical. I honestly wish I had the type of guidance shared in this book a few years back...but I’m glad I have it now.” (Nina Brown, radio and TV host)

“I’m not a huge fan of counseling, but Pastor Cal makes me look at it differently. He’s such a down to earth guy and breaks things down in a way that empowers you and makes you want to better yourself.” (Ty Law, Pro Football Hall of Fame, class of 2019)

Very balanced and practical perspective BUT

This is a very balanced perspective from a faith driven perspective. Sound practical advice. BUT I am disturbed at claiming the goal of marriage is not happiness. Roberson claims happiness is the outcome of goals in a marriage, so the claim that happiness is not a goal of marriage seems like a semantic gymnastics. If our goal for marriage is happiness then the steps we take towards that goal - some of which Roberson highlights, are the process, not the goal. I challenge his notion. Of happiness as a goal because it gives the impression this is a lesser factor of importance in marriage. If our goals accomplished together bring happiness then happiness is tantamount to a successful marriage. It is a sign the marriage has accomplished that very goal of happiness for each spouse in attaining what they hope to do together. If people merely attain goals and are not happy with the marriage then the marriage is unsuccessful. Many marriages succumb to divorce even when a couple accomplishes goals that supposedly should lead to happiness. And they divorce because these goals accomplished do not produce happiness. I am concerned the latest Christian trend is to dismiss emotions and tell people to not punk out. Yet it’s the martyrdom of being in emotionally miserable marriages for the sake of enduring the vow till the end to accomplish goals that has too many marriages lasting a lifetime and ultimately doing nothing but producing a generation of children who see these miserable marriages as a prison they are uninterested in attempting, so what was the point of the couple’s goals then?

The Greatest Marriage Book Ever!

This is definitely one of the greatest books on marriage that I have ever read. And, I have read many books on marriage. Mr. Roberson is very practical and down to earth. I love the stories that he shares, they are real life situations that anyone can relate to. It is truly, marriage counseling in a book. This book really help me to understand where my marriage is and how to move forward. Everyone in a relationship, married or unmarried would benefit from reading or listening to this book. Another thing I really enjoyed, was that Mr. Roberson didn't sugar coat anything or give false hope. He acknowledged that some couples will end up getting a divorce. Mr. Roberson address how to navigate through divorce. This is truly a book on relationships and I think it is beneficial to anyone in a relationship. This is a must read!!!!!

Thought provoking

I’ve read/listened to many marriage books and his viewpoint is refreshing and different. I enjoyed his Christian background and how he was respectful and not pushy in explaining his viewpoints. I liked how he talked about conflict is just a natural part of a marriage.

Great Book

An amazing book that can make a huge difference if you are open to it and sometimes even if you’re not. I start reading this book mentally checked out with one foot out the door… it changed my attitude & my hope for what my towards could look like. If you had previously suggested to me that one book or author could have done so, I probably would have laughed at you. Highly recommended.
