Another great book narrated by Al Benelli...

What did you love best about Marlow: The Neon Goodbye?

I like all detective characters... Magnum P.I., Mannix, Popeye Doyle, Steve McGarrett... and Rick Marlow fits in perfectly. Easy to picture, track and predict. What makes this story special is that Rick's history with the NYPD is a pretty twisted set of circumstances that he's still trying to solve. Makes for good reading/listening.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Oh, well definitely Rick Marlow since he's the main character but there's a pretty good cast of supporting folks as well. Della... Walter... Chief Tom Lerner... the Jamaican drug dealer... and gaggle of NYC cops & family down in Key West for a wedding, or so we're led to believe... all gave the narrator a lot of good opportunities to bring the characters created by Bill Craig to life. The assortment of voices made it easy to track everyone, even during the many scene changes.

Which scene was your favorite?

The final shootout which reveals the "surprise" ending. Didn't see this coming... which made the book that much more enjoyable... kept me guessing throughout as the folks I thought were the perpetrators kept turning up dead somewhere on the island.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

You can move the ex-cop out of the city... but you can't stop his past from hunting him down!

Any additional comments?

I've been following "Al Benelli" narrated books on Audible and he's introduced me to some pretty cool authors. Comedies, thrillers, biographies, heart-warmers... it's quite an assortment of good entertainment. I'm liking these audio books in a way I never thought I would.

An Exciting Detective Story

The Neon Goodbye is a fun, action packed detective story. The characters are interesting and believable. While the plot doesn't give you any information to figure out the solution ahead of time, the mystery does wind between suspects and keeps you guessing until the final reveal. While the body count stretched my suspension of disbelief a bit, all the main characters felt real and kept me fully engaged.

The narrator does a great job of voicing the characters, using different accents to ensure that everyone is distinguishable. He definitely performs the story and really brings it to life.

I'd recommend this book to anyone looking for a quick, fun mystery with plenty of excitement and surprises!
