Publisher's summary

The Heresy came to Calth without warning. In just a few hours of betrayal and bloodshed, the proud warriors of the XIIIth Legion - Guilliman's own Ultramarines - were laid low by the treachery of their erstwhile brothers of the XVIIth.

Now, as the planet is scoured by solar flares from the wounded Veridian star, the survivors must take the fight to the remaining Word Bearers and their foul allies or face damnation in the gloomy arcology shelters beneath the planet's surface.

In the novella-length Calth That Was, Graham McNeill highlights the fateful encounter that will alter the destiny of Captain Ventanus and shape the face of the Ultramarines Chapter for 10,000 years to come. The battle for Calth is far from over.

Excellent Stories

i was put off by the other reviews but took the risk and was not disappointed. these stories fill in some gaps in between know no fear and other books in the series and the last 2 stories involving the athem and Ol Pierson give more human color and depth to the multi millennium conflict that is going "just as planned"

Different stories, different narrators, different authors.

One thing I’ve noticed in regards to the reviews of this book are that they’re on polar opposites. As such, I went into this book trying to keep as open of a mind as I could. I will start by saying that this book is certainly skippable if you don’t have much interest in the aftermath of the Calth Atrocity. Some stories were definitely better than others, there’s no doubt about it. Some of the narrators reading said stories were better than others. However, that isn’t to say that everything was awful. The last two stories were the only two that I felt truly lined up with one another and were the best written in my opinion. For those that have an interest in the characters from Know No Fear, ie. Ventanus, Ollanius, and others, then this is definitely a good book. Unfortunately, not all of the stories were in true chronological order, and some jumped before and after the Calth Atrocity. However, there is good content here for those that actually cared about the characters in Know No Fear. One thing’s for certain, if you go into this book with an open mind, despite the polar opposite reviews, this book will be more enjoyable. The stories will be easier for you to form your own opinion over. Personally, I was interested in the fate of Oll and Ventanus, and their stories were written well. Some of the other stories weren’t as well written and are likely what drags this book down when it comes to other people’s opinions. Like I said, this can easily be skipped and Know No Fear could easily be read before Betrayer, but there is still good content for those that had an interest in KNF’s characters.

Meh

This was the most unneccesary addition to the heresy since battle for the abyss or whatever the entire novel dedicated to explaining lorgars special ship was. I'm glad I'm done and can move on. I honestly don't remember a single moment worth sharing. pure filler.

Almost skipped - happy I didn’t

Was skeptical about this anthology, as some people online said it was slow and not worth it. So glad I didn’t listen! Pacing was great, lore was interesting. Really enjoyed this one

Amazing and in depth lore

Definitely one of my favorite heresy books. Knowing how the siege ends and how Horus dies really puts in perspective how imperative Ol’s mission is. Seeing his backstory was my favorite story and his escape from Macarr!

The anthologies aren’t my favorite but this one is great. Good to see All Person doing his thing

Great voice actors, boring/confusing story

All the voice actors are great but a lot of the stories just seem random or unnecessary to listen to, only get if your interested about the two legions

A slow yet great sequel

This is a collection of novellas and short stories that take place during and after the events of “Know No Fear”. The first half is much slower and while it does pickup the pace, I still find it a bit of a slog to get through at some point.

Not Bad

This wasn't a bad audible. Not my favorite. But, I did enjoy the stories. A couple of them in kind of wandered off. Luckily the Narrators keep my attention.
