Publisher's summary

"You will move through this world as a wraith...."

In the aftermath of the Cygnaran civil war, warcaster Allister Caine has become a fugitive, hiding out in a backwater town where little ever happens.

Until the bodies start piling up, and Caine is accused of murder. And Caine can't be entirely sure he's innocent.

With only a cryptic riddle whispered in his ear, a mysterious rune tattooed on his arm, and an unusual little girl by his side, Caine will need to stay one step ahead of the elite squad of hunters known as the Black 13th. As they close in, bent on bringing him to justice for crimes he might not have committed, Caine must unravel why everyone he's ever known is suddenly marked for death...and keep from becoming his own final victim.

Really enjoy this subseries

Really enjoyed this one. Hope they continue the series. Caine and the Black 13th are interesting characters in the Iron Kingdoms universe.

Best Caine book so far.

It took me awhile to get used to the new Clint Eastwood sounding Caine, but I really love him! This is a nail-biter of a story, with good pacing and character development. it's a step up for a Privateer Press story. I couldn't wait til the end, and can't wait til the next book! Excellent narrator also

Great start, too much unresolved.

The book starts great, and the story so far is good. It lacks any real resolution at the end. It feels more like a lead in to the next book, rather than a complete story of its own.

Delightful and Entertaining

I found no faults with this story. Despite being set within a large, complex world with unique elements, it requires barely more than cursory knowledge to be fully understood. Distinct and enjoyable characters with good dialogue flow between fight scenes that are exciting and understandable. A fine story leaves you tense and guessing.

Adventure that will have you hooked.

After the first couple of chapters I knew how everything was going to go...or so I thought. ;) This is pulp fantasy at its best. You think you are going to get gunfights akin to John Wick with a fantasy twist...and that is partially true, but before I knew it some horror had been added into the mix. I did not predict the way this would go and I was on the edge of my seat. Recommended, especially if you love the Iron Kingdoms setting.

I love the Caine story line but felt board at time

I love the story line for cane however I was a little disappointed with this one. The climax of The Book Of course kept me very entertained however the majority of the book I felt almost pushed away. not the worst thing I've ever read but just entertaining enough to keep me into it. all and all by it but don't expect too much.
