No more DCI Banks for me

I gave up on this before the end of the first chapter because I had had enough of the author’s political views. I read crime novels for entertainment (I avoid the nasty ones), and I do not want to hear Mr Robinson’s personal views -which they clearly were. I am trying to return this because I am so cross about this. If I had known he was going to turn his books into a political voice, I would not have bought this. Entertaining it was not.

Once a very good detective writer, now he turned his books into some sort of vulgar left political propaganda.

All bad characters are rich, well educated, white and British, looking like Nigel Farage. Baddies are for Brexit of course. They all racists, fascists, perverts, criminals and rich ( that seem to be the main point).

All good characters are poor, refugees, junkies , prostitutes and people of colour. They are for European Union and multi culturalism.

It is not allowed to mention Rochdale and Rozerham, because it s racism and hate speech, but it s allowed to shout about racism towards refugees from bad white rich people.

It is allowed to kill bad white capitalist - serves him right! Or rape a white underage girl from rich family - nobody tries to investigate the crime.
But it s a tragedy and horrible thing to kill a13 year old illegal immigrant that was selling drugs.
Once Robinson was quoting John Donne who said that death of any human diminishes me.

Now he is about to quote cannibals like Lenin and Stalin - who did not care about death of millions of “ rich” people and another millions of educated.

What can I say? Farewell, bad writer Robinson. Read Archipelago Gulag - and admire what your favourite left idea has done to once flourishing and rich country. May be that will wake you up a bit.

Could Be A Two Hour Abridgement

I used to love this author. But this book is terrible. Whole chapters devoted to his past love interests and pointless side issues, converstions going on about meaningless drivel with nothing to do with the story. I am sure just to fill a very thin plotline. It could easily be abridged to just two hours and then at least you would have the actual storyline! I rarely give very bad reviews but this one deserved one such. Sorry, Peter, I may try one more in the future, but if anything like this is going back!

Plot weak.

Did not enjoy this book as much as all the other DCI Banks novels too much politics not enough plot.

Too negative

I was really disappointed with this.

The whole Eastern European sex trafficking storylines are just too ubiquitous.

Add this to the negative remarks about England and Yorkshire and I frankly couldn’t be bothered to persevere.

If I wanted to read political commentary I would, I wanted to be entertained or distracted from from lockdown. Very tedious.

Preposterous in parts

Is the author trying to impress an 18 year old girl he met at a book reading, maybe a more skilful writer could write a more convincing ‘searing indictment of the patriarchy ‘ but not this workmanlike writer of enjoyable police procedurals. No copper on the beat is going to scream invective in a seriously assaulted woman's face just because she is a sex worker, even if only to cover his own back. This book lacked so much credibility at every turn it was a little bizarre. There has to be a story behind all this...

The underlying theme running through the last two novels suggests an interesting future resolution.We shall see!

Today I fell out of love with Banks

Notwithstanding the anti Brexit nuance of the book, it is very hard to believe that Romanian orphanages have libraries of classic, English children's literature and spy books.
What a disappointment this latest DCI Banks book was. Will not be rushing to read any more.

Great story as ever listened to the book in 2 sittings absolutely compelling couldn’t get enough, excellent

Enjoyed it just as much as his previous books

I enjoyed this story just as much as the other DCI Banks. Yes, the character is changing, as we all do. I was sorry to see some of the negative reviews, very unfairly based on the fact that the new heroine is from Moldova and Peter Robinson touches on the Brexit divide and some of the negative effects. He has always touched on current political or historic affairs in his books, has always pointed to the negative consequences or effects, this is no different, but for the fact that Brexit is all to current, fresh and still a sore point. My point is that the negative reviews are undeserved and the book is just as good as his others in the series, a good story.
