Publisher's summary

Award-winning Jane Austen narrator Alison Larkin is back with this hugely entertaining recording of Mansfield Park, followed by fascinating bonus material!

Eleven-year-old Fanny Price is "adopted" by wealthy relatives and leaves her life of poverty in Portsmouth for a much better life at Mansfield Park. Dependent, vulnerable, and often ignored, her only true friend in her new family is her cousin Edmund. When the reckless, flirtatious Crawfords arrive at Mansfield Park, Fanny must stand up for her principles in order to protect her heart.

Mansfield Park is followed by opinions on the novel by Austen's family and friends, never before heard on audio.

Like most writers, Jane Austen was very interested in what her family and friends thought of her books. She wrote down their opinions of Mansfield Park, recording both the bad and the good. These opinions dating from 1814 and 1815 will give solace to any writer whose work has been criticized, and will amuse and delight Austen fans worldwide.

"Alison Larkin's narration will captivate listeners from the first sentence. Her delicate voice and perfect English accent sweep the listener back in time, right into the lives of the characters.... Austen's nineteenth-century writing style flows off Larkin's tongue, making the dense passages easy to understand." - AudioFile Magazine

Loved It

I got this ARC via audiobook boom and this is my voluntary review. I loved fanny's story. The entire tale from beginning to end was well developed and the narrator kept the story moving right along. Each character had a distinctive voice and many times I felt like jumping in a wringing that aunt's neck. but that is neither here nor there. As Fanny grows she learns that being independent helps her to become the woman of principle that she became. I loved the story.

Excellent narration

I listened to the audiobook of Mansfield Park as a reread. I love all that is Jane Austen and love to reread my favorites . Mansfield Park is a little different, with a heroine who is maybe not quite as strong and independent, but it is a great window into Jane Austen’s time. The narration by Alison Larkin is perfect for the story and kept me entertained throughout!

Mansfield Park

I have enjoyed all of the books I’ve read by Jane Austen, and Mansfield Park is no exception. It took me a little bit to warm up the the characters, but I enjoyed and sympathized with Fanny immediately.
Fanny Price moved in with her aunt, uncle, and cousins when she was 10. She had a hard time of it because she was a shy child, and the new home was overwhelming to her. Everyone seemed to be against her, except her cousin, Edmond. Luckily his friendship and kindness brought her out of her shell.
As she grew older, she became a very beautiful and proper young lady. She had very high morals and didn’t allow anyone to persuade her to do anything she thought improper. I really liked her character. It helped keep the differences of some of the other characters interesting. Her awful Aunt Norris was especially a pain. I rolled my eyes at her more than once.
At the very end of the book, we got to hear what Jane Austen’s family and friends thought of the book. What a treat! It is amazing how many years have passed from the time this book was written, yet people then and now have such differing opinions from each other in both time periods. Some loved it, and some didn’t.
Alison Larkin’s performance of this audiobook was outstanding!

The narration nailed this version to the top

Having read and studied all of Jane Austen's works in college, it is a pleasure to listen to them for the shear enjoyment of the stories and prose. Mansfield Park is one of the classics and when you add to the the superb voice and style of Alison Larkin it brings it to the top of the charts, IMHO. In fact, when one closes their eyes, oe could imagine it being Jane Austen, herself, reading the book. I would highly, HIGHLY, recommend this adaptation of Mansfield Park to any lover of Austen's work. WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL!

I just listened to this as part of The Complete Novels by Jane Austen read by Alison Larkin which was recently released as it is the only Jane Austen I had not heard Ms Larkin narrate and OH this is SUCH a wonderful recording! At the end there are letters too from people Jane Austen knew - friends and family - and they are fascinating. A delightful, wholly accessible listen from an A List narrator with additional material at the end of it. Who could ask for anything more?

Outstanding Rendition of Austen Classic!

I've listened to audio recordings of Mansfield Park 4 or 5 times over the past 20+ years, and this version is my favorite. While Mansfield Park is not one of my favorite Austen novels, Alison Larkin provides an enchanting narration that is delivered as it was meant to be read.

Mansfield Park is the classic tale of impoverished 11-year-old Fanny Price who goes to live with her mother's wealthy relatives at the Mansfield Park estate. Fanny grows up mostly ignored, independent, and a bit of a dreamer. Despite this, she develops a close friendship with her cousin Edmund. When Fanny starts to develop romantic feelings for Edmund, the charismatic Crawfords arrive at Mansfield Park and havoc ensues with the other residents falling in love with them. Thankfully Fanny remains steadfast to her true feelings and everything turns out all right in the end.

Alison Larkin's narration was thoroughly entertaining. As she does with all of her narrations, Alison uses differing voices for each character and she changes up the tempo during the most exciting parts of the story. But my favorite aspect of Alison's narration is that she delivers what Jane Austen wrote — with satiric wit and humor. As an added bonus, this version of the audiobook includes several critiques about the book from Jane's family and friends. These opinions dating from 1814 and 1815 range from “liking it better than Sense and Sensibility” to “not preferring the characters as much as those in Pride and Prejudice.” I really enjoyed listening to these little comments from the time period that the book was first released. Brava!
