Romilda cresce così tra gli insegnamenti della madre, che attraverso la cura delle api le insegna la dolcezza e il potere, e quelli del padre, che conosce la natura e sa che dolcezza e potere possono essere distruttivi se non li si controlla. Ma Romilda è destinata a incontrare presto la violenza del ferro e la prepotenza del fuoco: don Francesco, barone di Ventimiglia, la chiede in sposa ancora bambina. Seguire don Francesco significherà lasciare il bosco, conoscere le durezze di una vita più agiata ma profondamente inautentica, in cui anche l'esperienza della maternità può finire per espropriare una donna di se stessa.
