Josh is the Best!!!

I'm actually listening to his short stories again. He develops characters like no other while building mystery and tension through great story telling. I can't wait for more Novellas from him!

Great for commuters

I'm a very big fan of Lanyon's and had already read several of these. It's a good collection, and I made lots of happy-sigh sounds throughout. Jason Clarke is especially enjoyable as a narrator, with a nice range of voices, and great rhythm and range of emotion. The high rating is for the stories that aren't "A Vintage Affair." That story dragged badly and the narration (by a woman???) was deplorable, complete with horrid Southern accents. I couldn't get into my hero sounding like a 13-year-old girl. Or any of the other men for that matter. Also, as a Southerner, the huge dollop of apparent dislike for the region was off-putting. I have a decent tolerance for the unavoidable stereotypes of Southerners but this ran the line pretty close to downright insulting - complete with references to siblings marrying, calling out-of-towners 'damn Yankees,' bemoaning the Old South and living in the past, and the hero worrying about "getting lynched" if he appears to be coming on to a man who might not be gay. Har har. The boring dialogue is sprinkled with pretty much every cliche of Southern speech. Truly a dreadful effort, bless Lanyon's heart.

Pretty good

Some stories were better then others. My only problem with novellas is they always leave me wanting more. The stories give just enough info to reel me in, then BAM! Story ends. There are 3 narrators and they were all very good. Josh Lanyon is a go to author of mine that no matter the story, I know they will be good .

Mystery with a dash of romance

The majority of the stories here are full of mystery and suspense, and are very much in Lanyon's typical style. The weakest story is Blood Red Butterfly, but otherwise this set is a very good value. Narration was top notch.

Excellent

Would you listen to Male/Male Mystery and Suspense Box Set again? Why?

Yes. Each story, being a short story, allowed the writer to condense his artistry without fillers. The romance and sexual episodes were sensual but not overblown into porno. More like a normal part of life. Nice themes where boy meets boy.

What about the narrators’s performance did you like?

Narrator captured the voices very well.

Generally a pleasant listen

Cards on the Table and Don't Look Back were really good, definitely my favorites out of the whom bunch. The Dark Horse and Lovers And Other Strangers were also nice. A Vintage Affair was ok, but kind of boring at times, with the weakest mystery and a bit of a cringy scene near the end of the story. Blood Red Butterfly was the weakest one overall, with the whole premise being uncomfortably unbelievable. All in all it was a positive experience :)

Great Value Pack for Lanyon fans

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I'd certainly recommend to any fans of Josh Lanyon's writing. It gives a good flavour of some varied stories.

What did you like best about this story?

Out of the six stories, three are counted as in my 'favourites' for the author - Dark Horse, Cards on the Table and Don't Look Back . All of them are classic Lanyon with an engaging story, great sense of place and character, and a good mystery. One other one - Lovers and Other Strangers - was very good. The other two didn't work so well for me but that was more to do with the stories themselves than the narration. I thought Blood Red Butterfly was a little dull and A Vintage Affair is excellent right up until a scene towards the end which I felt marred the remaining of the story.

What about the narrators’s performance did you like?

I wasn't sure about Lance Greenfield at first but his voice grew on me and he was good at nuanced distinctions between the characters. Really liked Chris Gebauer's voice for A Vintage Affair. He set a good pace and drew me into the story quickly, plus I could easily tell between the characters. Jason Clarke was also good but at times I struggled to differentiate between who was talking,

Any additional comments?

Overall, if you are looking to try out this author, then this is very good value at over 24 hours of listening, plus you get a nice range of stories.

A Real Mixed Bag

It's was like shopping off a market stall, you get the good apples and the not so good in one bag. take it or leave it. Two of the narrators were good, one wasn't. On top of the mixed content, this bundle was unfinishable.
