Making a Change with Katie Long

Katie Long is an MD/PhD student at the University of Chicago. She is getting her PhD in computational neuroscience, and the focus of her research is our sense of touch.  A couple years ago, she began work on a collaborative project aimed at helping women who undergo mastectomy -- a surgery to remove the breasts to treat or prevent cancer. Many women with mastectomy lose sensation in their breasts, and this project centers on creating a device, which they have been calling the Bionic Breast, that will interface with women's nerves to restore the sensation that is lost.
