Publisher's Summary

Podcasting is the fastest-growing media platform in the world, with currently 650,000 podcasts out there, in 100 languages, and offering over 20 million episodes. And we’re only at the beginning. More and more podcasts appear every day, and more and more entrepreneurs, businesses, individuals, and distributors, like Spotify, are getting into this world. One person many people turn to for help launching their podcasts is Eric Nuzum, a veteran of NPR and Audible who’s had a hand in creating and launching over 130 podcasts. And the reason is that Nuzum understands the essentials of what makes a podcast work and knows how to help creators shepherd their vision from rough idea to finished product.

Make Noise brings all the wisdom, advice, practical information, and big-picture thinking that any individual or business needs to make a successful podcast. He identifies core principles - such as create empathetically, i.e., think like the audience listens, and stay focused on what’s unique to you and what you have to say. He helps listeners come up with a “Ten Word Description” that will guide them throughout the creative process and then gets into how-tos - how to develop character, story, voice; how to conduct an effective interview; how to be mindful of the limitations of audio (be more like Hemingway than Faulkner). He provides the rules of storytelling, advice on how to test-drive an idea, and, when it’s all ready, how to develop your audience.

Featured Article: How to Start a Podcast

It’s not breaking news that podcasts are hot. Both listening and production have skyrocketed over the past decade, with an estimated 104 million monthly podcast fans regularly tuning into their favorite shows in the United States alone. Why the big boom? When compared to mediums like television and music production, podcasting is a more democratized media format. Podcasting has a relatively low barrier to entry, requires little equipment, has low startup costs, and can be a fun way to get your voice, stories, and ideas out into the world. Consider this guide your personal podcasting roadmap!

Excellent, thought provoking.

I’ll be quite honest I did not have a lot of knowledge of podcasting although I had read a couple other books. I found that the information in the way it was expressed to be easy to understand thought-provoking interesting and a great overview of podcasting and how to work out titles as it pertains to descriptions. As an audible selection I have listened to this book no less than three times some chapters three or four times and each time that I listen to another chapter I feel that I pick up on another detail which I did not fully understand. So much in fact, have ordered the written book as well.

Motivating as heck

Made me record and publish my very first podcast episode so it worked like a charm for me, even though I didn't even want to make a podcast when I bough it!

Important read for all newbie podcasters

If you want to start a podcast this book clearly details every aspect for how to start creating one. At times overwhelmed by all the information, in the end there was so many “best advice” tips to help get stared! I eventually relaxed into it. My favorite tips were: write strategic mantra, a 10 word description, and simply put GO FOR IT! I especially appreciated his make mistake advice! Actually there are so many pearls of wisdom that if you’re an entrepreneur this book is a must! Thank you Eric! Peggy Curry Girls Kitchen:) your advice and guidance was tremendous. 🙏💝

Just fine

Nothing you can’t really access for free by reading an article or two.
Also, the jokes are not funny. If you are not a successful comedian, what makes you think you can try and crack jokes in every other paragraph?
And also also, the anecdotes are way to cliche - they almost all sound made-up.
Other than that, it was okay.

Excellent Guide for Anyone Considering Podcasting

This is a truely excellent guide for anyone considering podcasting. It is much more than the mere nuts and bolts of what is involved in setting up a podcast but gives real and practical advice on exactly how to go about creating a podcast that someone might actually listen to. It also contains some genuine wisd on running a business and working life generally. Highly recommend.
