The ending is horrifyingly sad, and Simenon gradually, gently and unsuspectingly reveals to the reader the facts that inextricably to this pathetic ending. What makes it all the more striking is that all of this happens while Maigret is taking a 2-week cure at the health resort of Vichy where he and the other patients are supposed to enjoy a moment of peace in the most relaxed atmosphere, far away from the hustle and bustle of Paris and his headquarters at the Quai d’Orvebres. So you have this contrast between the carefree and uneventful routine life of the health resort and the developing drama of the crime story. The clashing nature of the two is made all the more tangible when Maigret is, at the very end, charged to inform the unsuspecting wife the circumstances that culminated in her husband’s arrest. One can only imagine what that painful scene would be like, and imagine we must since Fortunately Simenon spared us from witnessing it.
