Publisher's summary

In the second book in number-one New York Times best-selling author Ilona Andrews' Kate Daniels series, tempers - and temperatures - are rising!

A mercenary in magic-torn Atlanta who cleans up after magic gone wrong, Kate Daniels has seen it all - and some things she couldn't even have imagined. Normally, waves of paranormal energy ebb and flow like an ocean current. But once every seven years, a paranormal flare comes and brings magic like a tidal wave. Now Kate faces problems on a much bigger scale: a divine one.

When Kate sets out to retrieve a set of stolen maps for the Pack, Atlanta's paramilitary organization of shapeshifters, she quickly realizes the stakes. During a flare, gods and goddesses can manifest and battle for power. The stolen maps are only the first contest in an epic tug-of-war between two gods hoping for rebirth. And if Kate can't stop their cataclysmic showdown, the city may not survive.

So good!

I had issues with the first book, but this did not deter me from checking out book 2. People love this series and so I decided to give the series one more chance and since I had my monthly freebie from Audible, I decided to get this one.

Kate is a mercenary who cleans up after magic goes wrong. Well, this time a tide of magic is coming that will boost everyone's powers. She has to retrieve a set of stolen maps that was stolen from the Pack. Well...nothing can be simple or easy. She has to deal with a lot in this one.

I'm actually liking Kate. I wasn't a huge fan in the last one, but we get to understand her more. Personally and her powers. We got to see more of the world and it connected a lot of dots for me. I'm slowly liking Curran...a bit. He's still an asshat, but I understand him more now.

This was SO much better than the first one. I could hardly step away and turn off the audiobook. I had to listen to more. I was hooked from the first page. The narrator was really, really good so I think this helped me like the story and characters more. The writing and the narration were amazing.

I do want to see what happens next, but I was content on how they ended this book. No cliffies. Just some promise and a question. I am curious, but I don't feel forced...which is a huge plus and the way to end a book in a series.

So yessssss, if you did not like book 1, do not stop. Read or listen to book 2. So good. I'll stamp this with 5 stars. I had zero issues.

"Glad you made it... Sike!" - The Beast Lord

I like the way the romance in this series is developing. Such a good pace. Not the instant, love at first sight type crazy stuff. Instead, I think we are going to get to see a real journey of two people learning to love each other.

One thing about Kate Daniel's so far is that she isnt tormented by being a kick-butt chick. So many female characters are weighed down by authors who want a kick-butt character but are too distracted by making her fit into a female heroine box. Girls can be bad. Females can be fierce. Chicks can be cruel. We dont fit into boxes.

The world building for this begins to make more sense to me in this one. I sorta kinda wasnt sure in the last book, but I get the whike Tech/Magic world now. Not until this book did I fully understand the whole "The People" thing too. The vampire section of the first book just didnt hit the A
-Ha button for me either. If you are like me and didnt a bit more explanation then you'll get that in Book 2.

There is something suspicious about Crest wanting to marry such a submissive shapeshifter... if they've been engaged for two months and it's been 4 months since book 1 then they had only known each other 2 months before getting engaged.

A sad thing about this is that I'm half way through the next book while writing this review. This means I wont have time to review them all. It also means they are so good I cant wait to start the next one.

horrible narration

The narrator had a breathy voice for every sentence. Women do not talk like that and if a person talked like that they would have no friends because people would get tired of hearing it. The world building is top-notch, the narration ruins it completely and utterly.

These are such great Audible books!

Action, drama, romance, magic, gratuitous violence, shapeshifters, witches and monsters... What else do you need? Oh there’s heroes and heroines too! This series rocks! Excellent delivery by the narrator.

Amazing Story, Awful Narrator

I read this entire series as it came out and wanted to buy the audiobooks for an easy, enjoyable reread.

This whole series is wonderful. The plot is great, the characters are phenomenally developed, and the writing itself is interesting.

The narrator is absolutely abysmal. She’s got a fine enough voice, but she has clearly never spoken to a single person from Georgia. Or the South in general. As a born and bred Atlantean, I cringed at every forced accent she adopted and every mispronounced word.

I guess this wouldn’t bother most people, but it nearly ruined the books for me. I would say if this is your only option for reading these books to go for it. But I think you’d be better off with the kindle or physical version so you can avoid the not-at-all accurate accents.

Complex world building, no romance

The story is complex with so much detail in the magical world and mystery/issue to be solved that it requires significant focus for an audio format. If you're listening while doing other tasks expect to rewind frequently. If you're looking for romance this probably isn't the book for you. There is an attraction between the heroine and the lion (the characters gracing every cover) but "slow burn" doesn't even touch the painful pace of their interactions. The story is definitely written by a talented author and told by a talented narrator. I will probably continue the series but for me it is a story better suited for reading when I can focus and not when in the mood for easy entertainment.

Good Story, Sad Narration

I really like the Kate Daniels series written by the Illona Andrews Duo. I’ve read the entire series and I was thrilled to find them on Audible. Unfortunately, my excitement has been doused by Renee Raudman’s narration. I suspect she would excel at children’s stories. She has a sweet voice and it is expressive; however, Kate Daniels is not a sweet character. She is a badass with a big heart. The story is full of shapeshifters and she makes the hyenas sound like they are retarded. Her rendition simply doesn’t make me feel like any of the shifters are being I need to be cautious around.

Voice wrong

Great story as usual. However, her voice does not fit a powerful character like Kate Daniels. Her voice just isn’t strong enough. It’s not that she doesn’t do the job she just doesn’t fit the character in my opinion.
