Nei tre anni seguenti queste imbarcazioni e questi uomini affronteranno battaglie, ammutinamenti, naufragi, tradimenti. Solcheranno mari mai affrontati prima dagli europei, entreranno in contatto con popoli e culture sconosciute, dai patagoni della Terra del Fuoco agli abitanti della Polinesia.
