Publisher's summary

Madeleine Verchère's story is based on a true account of colonial French Canada of the 1690s. Harassed by Iroquois, the Verchère family's fort must keep a continual guard. 14-year-old Madeleine is left alone with two younger brothers and few others when the Indians attack. We follow the brave and determined stratagems of Madeleine and her small circle. Madeleine's youthful leadership, especially of her brothers, will win the reader's admiration.

Interesting story but lackluster narration.

The narrator was well spoken however, she lacked the excitement and enthusiasm needed to help the reader/listener become engaged in the story. I wanted to feel what the characters felt in their moments of fear and the anxiety they felt being ever surrounded by the Mohawk seeking a way into their fort. The narrator had inflection and diction but no substance.

Great story, not great narrator

No hate towards the narrator of this story, but i did not like the way she had read. she paused a lot, was slow, didn’t have a different voice for any characters, didn’t have emotion, sounded similar to a robot, sounded as if it was all different recordings for each sentence, and overall just wasn’t the right fit. I loved the story! it was a great story to show selflessness, bravery, and to have faith in God! if the story had a better narrator it would be great. if you just wanted to hear the story, you could probably order the book. but if you don’t mind the narrating quality i guess this would be great! anyways i rate the overall experience a 6/10.

The Narrator ruined the story!

I read the story a couple years ago and loved it. Now, I got the audible so my children and I could listen to it together. The narrator ruins the whole story. She has the same voice tone, very stoic, during the whole book. It is a very adventure story with moments of stress, suspense, fear, and joy and she turned into the most boring thing ever. Get the book and read to your children.

Gripping story well read

This retelling of a true historical account of a 14 year old girl and her brothers holding a fort against a Mohawk attack had my teens asking me to drive further so they could keep listening, even though we had all already read the book. The British narrator has a clear, gentle tone with a smooth French accent when necessary. She is not a lively narrator, but we thoroughly enjoyed her performance.

Amazing exciting story

Where does Madeleine Takes Command rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This book is great for kids and adults alike. Based on a true story it seems unbelievable to us today what this family went through! My sons loved it as much as my daughter. A must listen/read.
