Frustrated by the high costs and difficulty of accepting credit card payments, McKelvey joined his friend Jack Dorsey (the cofounder of Twitter) to launch Square, a startup that would enable small merchants to accept credit card payments on their mobile phones. The Innovation Stack is a thrilling business narrative that's much bigger than the story of Square. It is an irreverent first-person look inside the world of entrepreneurship, and a call to action for all of us to find the entrepreneur within ourselves and identify and fix unsolved problems - one crazy idea at a time.

Story
Today's "machine-learning" systems, trained by data, are so effective that we've invited them to see and hear for us - and to make decisions on our behalf. But alarm bells are ringing. Systems cull résumés until, years later, we discover that they have inherent gender biases. Algorithms decide bail and parole - and appear to assess black and white defendants differently. We can no longer assume that our mortgage application, or even our medical tests, will be seen by human eyes. And autonomous vehicles on our streets can injure or kill.

Publisher's Summary
The world of technology is able to capture the imagination. There are so many great possibilities out there. From voice recognition to facial recognition to all of the different types of gadgets and software out there, it seems like technology is not going to slow down any time soon. Even with all of the cool things that we already have at our disposal, it is possible that in even a few years, there will be even more that we can do with this amazing technology that we are not able to do now. And much of it is due to machine learning.
This guidebook is going to take some time to explore machine learning, and what it is all about. There are so many different aspects of machine learning and how to make it work for your needs, and all of it is found in this guidebook. Some of the different topics that you will be able to learn about inside include:
- What is machine learning, and why would a programmer want to learn how to use it?
- Is artificial intelligence the same as working with machine learning?
- How to work with statistics and probability in order to understand more about machine learning.
- Learning some of the building blocks that will ensure your success with machine learning.
- Some of the machine learning algorithms that you can use on your own projects.
- The difference between supervised, unsupervised and reinforcement learning.
Machine learning is making some big changes in the world of technology. And as more programmers start to learn about it and how to use it, the possibilities are going to keep growing.
When you are ready to learn more about what machine learning is all about, and how you are able to benefit from it in your own coding and programming, make sure to check out this guidebook to help you get started.

Not really useful
I need to preface my review by saying that I only got through the first few chapters of this book. I know hardly anything about this topic and I found this book too basic even for me. That in itself is not a problem. The problem is repetition, and lack of a good editor. Just in the first few chapters, the author has beat me over the head with how useful machine learning is and how well it works in handling big data. All right. I get it. I wondered if he was paid by the word.
Also, the chapter I’m currently in promised to discuss the difference between AI and machine learning. I really wanted to hear that. But after again telling us how wonderful ML is with big data (and again praising search engines) the chapter ends with something like “and now you see the difference between machine learning and artificial intelligence” — when he hasn’t even talked about AI. That’s when I decided to bail.
I’ll give more leeway to fiction, but a nonfiction book has to demonstrate within the first chapters that it will be useful. People are way too busy to waste time.

Poorly written, bad grammar, no useful information. Total waste of time.
